Side Letter Agreement Between the City of Pasadena and the Pasadena Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 809
Captain Working Down as Fire Engineer Policy
This document shall serve as a Side Letter of Agreement to memorialize the agreement between the City of Pasadena and the Pasadena Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 809 as it pertains to Captain "work downs" as Fire Engineers and shall be in effect upon its execution by both parties.
The City and the IAFF Local 809 have met and conferred in good faith concerning the terms and conditions of this Side Letter Agreement and its implementation and now therefore agrees as follows:
Approval for a "work down" is at the sole discretion of the Fire Chief or designee. The Fire Chief or designee is not bound to utilize the "work down" option and may elect not to use the option for any reason.
When an Engineer vacancy exists and to avoid extending beyond 120 hours, canceling Vacation/Trade protections, or using an Actor for an extended period of time, the Fire Chief or designee may authorize "work downs" for Captains who were former PFD Engineers.
Eligibility: Captains who held the rank of Engineer for the Pasadena Fire Department AND have completed a Department remedial training orientation.
The Fire Captain "working down" as a Fire Engineer shall receive their normal hourly wage for regular hours worked and time and one-half for any overtime hours worked.
This side letter will sunset in alignment with the current MOU expiration of December 31, 2026.
Either side may cancel this Side Letter Agreement with 30 days' notice.
