To the MSC,
PWP states that they have exceptionally high demand for electricity during peak periods and that they take great pride in not going down for more than minutes compared to surrounding utilities that often go down for hours during peak periods.
I ask:
why would PWP not encourage private investment in rooftop solar? They would not be paying for residents to get permits and do all the follow-up work and expense required for individual homeowners to install on their properties. They claim it makes working class residents pay more for power entering their homes. It’s the same claim for-profit privately held companies like SoCal Edison make. Yet neither appear to care more than a wit ($10) about working class utility bills.
Pasadena has a choice. We can either truly commit to the climate crisis and require our municipally owned utility to take significant and meaningful actions to increase renewables every way possible, solar panels being a pretty easy action, or we can be active contributors to future destructions as seen in Altadena. The former reflects acknowledgment of the damage we are doing to ourselves and our children’s futures; the latter allows for a lot of hand wringing and many furrowed brows, and again kicking the can down the road.
MSC, as a resident who has solar panels and wants batteries, please require our utility to incorporate solar panels and batteries into their solutions for their peak needs. And make the application process more owner friendly. Also required is for our municipally owned utility to effectively bring this excess energy stored in residential batteries back into their system. I haven't even mentioned rooftop solar on public buildings.
Pasadena could use existing technology and innovative solutions before another fire happens the magnitude of Altadena’s. I know you are clear on the emergency we face and have recently been facing. Thank you for your many, many actions that have already helped our neighbors. Please be equally clear and require PWP to get serious about rooftop solar.
