Councilmembers,
Let me say first off that I appreciate any efforts to make us safe from wildfires.
We are all
afraid that the Eaton disaster, or a smaller or larger fire, will happen again here in our
city.
I
live on Linda Vista and I still remember the frightening smell and smoke as we evacuated.
I
also know that there is lots of dry brush on Linda Vista Ridge that needs to be cleared and managed.
Because I am afraid,
I read every page of the Wildfire Mitigation Plan.
Pages are devoted to
org charts, job descriptions and general statements about the objectives of the plan ("minimize
sources of ignition"--well yes, but how? and where?) On page 13 we finally get to specifics about technical improvements and undergrounding. This is all good.
On page 21,
there is an inconclusive discussion about tree trimming.
There is a curious section on
checking to see if what we are doing makes sense.
There is nothing in this report about climate change,
other than a passing reference to drought,
high winds and heat waves as if these things just came up out of the blue.
It is good that we are undergrounding
and covering wires, but I don't feel confident that these measures will save us or future generations.
The root cause of the problem must be
addressed.
We are causing climate change every day that we
burn fossil fuels for our electric
power.
The next agenda item --the public works budget, has not a single sentence about public buildings and implementation of the Climate Emergency Resolution that this Council
passed
We must wake up before it's too late, and take climate action.
