Dear MSC, City Clerk and City Councilmembers:

My name is Audrey Ma and I am a student at Polytechnic School.

I write today with a deep concern about climate change and a deeper hope that our city's future is still in our hands. I feel compelled to voice my support for a future powered by clean energy. Pasadena declared a climate emergency more than 2 years ago. It is time for our actions to match our words.

The proposed OSP is, unfortunately, not a plan. It lacks specifics. It lacks a timeline. It defies the direction this Council gave when it approved 4 viable pathways to meet our goal of carbon free energy by 2030.

After years of public input, millions in consulting fees, and sophisticated modeling, we are presented not with a roadmap to make true on the promise of Resolution 9977, but with a mirage.

Meanwhile we are faced with dire threats such as the Eaton Fire that tore through our neighborhoods and our families. Pasadena has always prided itself on leadership. Just look at Caltech and JPL. Let us lead on climate action. Let us insist on an OSP with clear milestones, transparent cost assessments and accountability. Let us reject vague outlines and promises and instead demand a real plan, one that the people of Pasadena deserve.

The expiration of the coal based energy contract in 2027 is not just a deadline but an opportunity. An opportunity to build a grid that is cleaner and more resilient. Please do not weaken net energy metering. It is our city’s most powerful tool for local clean energy. If we strip NEM 1.0, we take away the last incentive for many to go solar. Let’s not punish those who are helping us meet our climate goals – we should be thanking them by renewing NEM 1.0.

I urge you to stand with your constituents, stand with science and stand with kids like me and our future.

Demand that PWP deliver a real, actionable plan that at its core achieves 100% carbon free energy by 2030.

Thank you for your service and for your courage.

Sincerely,
Audrey Ma
