Dear Councilmembers,
As a District 2 resident and homeowner, I appreciate that the Legislative Policy Committee is addressing the issue of term limits for City Commissions. I have frequently observed individuals serving well beyond their designated term limits simply because their Councilmember has not yet appointed a replacement. As a result, some Commissioners continue to deliberate and take action on City matters well past the six-year limit (two three-year terms) established by City policy.

In addition, I encourage the Council to more carefully consider the professional qualifications of individuals appointed to serve on City Commissions. At times, these appointments appear to be driven by political or personal considerations rather than by relevant expertise. In many cases, appointees are not required to possess practical experience or subject- matter knowledge. This can result in Commissioners who lack the necessary background for informed decision-making, yet position themselves as subject-matter experts and at times dismiss the recommendations of professional staff.

Along with enforcing term limits, I hope the Council will strengthen its approach to Commissioner appointments by emphasizing professional qualifications and ensuring robust training opportunities for all appointees.

Respectfully,
Corey Dunlap
District 2 Resident
