Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,
We at Making Housing and Community Happen support the idea of a committee focusing on the need for housing our unhoused neighbors and those who are housing insecure in our city. This should be our major priority. We have an excellent track record of reducing homelessness by over 50% a few years ago, but we still have 556 people living on the streets according to the most recent homeless count. This is not acceptable.
With draconian budget cuts to HDD, it is likely that many will lose their Section 8 vouchers and end up on the streets. It is important that we preserve programs that are effective, like Safe Parking (which helped 17 people to become housed), and find new solutions and funding to reach the goal of "functional zero" homelessness.
No women or Vets and elderly people should be living on our streets. I urge this new committee to form a plan that will end homelessness in our city. Redondo Beach has achieved this goal, and so can we.
