The so-called "officer-involved shooting incident" that has been attributed to "horseplay" is a grave mischaracterization of what took place. The first thing one learns when handling a firearm is to never point the gun ay anything you want to stay alive.

I vividly recall the instruction 1 received the first time I handled a gun at a firing range, and the care and attention of every other person-staff and customer alike-around me to collectively enforce this fundamental safety practice. The fact that not only were the two officers directly involved in the shooting pointing their firearms at each other, but the adjacent officer was entirely unfazed by his colleagues violating this basic safeguard.

This is not horseplay. This is reckless disregard for the deadly force the department oversees. It puts the conduct of all of the officers into question.

If PPD officers are so reckless with their weapons around their colleagues, how can they be trusted to be responsible with their weapons around the rest of us? Daniel James (he/him)
