Dear City Council Members,
I write as a member of PASADENA 100 and a voting resident of District 7 who is deeply concerned about climate change and our city's energy portfolio and security.
I am specifically disappointed in the Progress Report's failure to address how PWP is meeting goals for local solar set by the OSP. While most of the city's solar power will come from outside contracted resources, developing robust local solar energy generation is critical for meeting the 100% carbon free by 2030 goal and our city's future energy security. PWP should be working with businesses and institutions to achieve increased solar electricity production that is not reliant on transmission from outside our system. There is no reporting in the PR on what steps PWP has taken.
In our summer months, this city is bathed in unrelenting sun that necessitates the constant operation of energy-consuming air conditioners. That unrelenting sun should be generating electricity that powers those air conditioners, which are critical for the health and well-being of residents and workers. Solar installations at local institutions and businesses are a critical piece of the plan.
The Council has set a mandate for clean energy that can inspire so many other cities and municipalities if it is met. Some say it is an ambitious mandate, but it is one that we can and must achieve. I ask that you continue to hold our municipally owned utility to your mandate.
Respectfully,
Claudia Funke
