Dear Mayor and Members of the City Council,
Instead of burdening Mary with another PRA request I found Miss Hull‘s answers to be insufficient. And if they’re charging those large of amounts, that information should be at her fingertips.
I am asking the Council to review the City’s legal costs with Best Best & Krieger (BBK).
The California Attorney General, the chief legal officer for the entire State of California, earns approximately $210,000–$214,000 per year (about $17,500–$17,800 per month).
By comparison, BBK is billing the City of Paso Robles approximately $134,000 per month, or about $1.6 million per year. At tonight’s meeting, a $224,000 payment to BBK was approved, and even the Mayor questioned the amount. THIS is the main reason why all of us advocates want to get rid if BBK.
George, Linda
M - General Public Comment
BBK represents roughly 30 California cities and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. Paso Robles’ legal costs are clearly not minor or routine and place our city among BBK’s higher-billing clients.
For a city of this size, spending at this level warrants serious scrutiny. Many comparable cities employ an in-house City Attorney at a fraction of this cost, using outside counsel only when necessary.
I respectfully urge the Council to publicly review these expenditures and evaluate alternatives, including hiring an in-house City Attorney or retaining a different firm with clearer cost controls.
Respectfully,
Linda George
