“May 2022”
NATIONAL BIKE MONTH
WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast since 1956; and WHEREAS, the bicycle is an economical, healthy, convenient, and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent tool for recreation and enjoyment; and WHEREAS, bike commuting is the third most popular U.S. transportation mode, increasing 61% nationwide from the year 2000 to 2019; and WHEREAS, creating a bicycling-friendly community has been shown to improve citizens’ health, well-being, and quality of life, growing the economy, attracting tourism dollars, improving traffic safety, supporting student learning outcomes, and reducing pollution, congestion, and wear and tear on our streets and roads; and WHEREAS, education of bicyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all road users; and WHEREAS, the City of Patterson encourages both its residents and visitors to bike to work or school, in order to improve air quality and promote the health benefits of cycling.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Dennis McCord, by the virtue of authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Patterson and on behalf of the City Council, do hereby officially proclaim “May 2022” as “National Bike Month” in the City of Patterson. I encourage citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and all other interested groups to join in promoting month-long activities that promote bicycling as fun, healthy, and environmentally viable form of transportation.
