Older Adults Recovery and Resilience (OARR) Funding for the Older Californians Nutrition Program and Intergenerational Activities Grant Proposal
Hammon Senior Center - City of Patterson
Project Name:

A Taste of Patterson: Dining, Dancing & Desserts!
Amount Requested:
$12,500. This would mainly be used to purchase food (through the local restaurants) for the events. However, there might be some ancillary expenses such as for entertainment, decorations and marketing. The YAC students (see below) would also work on fundraising and getting discounts and sponsorship from the various businesses that participate.

Project Description:

Since the pandemic, many older adults have remained isolated and food insecurity continues to be an ongoing issue. With this program, numerous seniors will have a chance to not only get meals, but increase their chances for socialization as well. These events would take place either weekdays in the late afternoon or on the weekends and would be a compliment to the already existing congregate mealsite at the Hammon Senior Center.

In this program, monthly special events will be planned by the Youth Action Commission (YAC), thus the intergenerational component, which is also administered by City of Patterson Recreation staff.

These special events will include a meal from a local restaurant, dances, games, bands and/or di's and other entertainment.

An example would be an upcoming Halloween event. A costume party would be held with a meal provided by a local restaurant, served by YAC staff and then games and a dance for the older adults of the community. These events would typically be themed parties in the season they occurred. We would decorate for these events and would promote through the local newspaper (Irrigator), the Hammon Senior Center monthly newsletter, flyers and the YAC students promoting throughout the community.

Target Market:

The target market would be the older adults of Patterson, especially those that are isolated, economically disadvantaged or a member of a minority population. In the local area, the per capita income is $18,898 with a median household income of $45,807. The 2010 United States Census reported that Patterson had a population of 20,413. The racial makeup of Patterson was 10,117 (49.6%) White, 1,291 (6.3%) African American, 221 (1.1%) Native American, 1,069 (5.2%) Asian, 280 (1.4%) Pacific Islander, 6,235 (30.5%) from other races, and 1,200 (5.9%) from two or more races.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11,971 persons (58.6%).

With this project, a good mix of these individuals would be served. This would be fairly consistent with our overall clientele who currently participate in activities at the Hammon Senior Center.

Thus, this project will meet numerous objectives of the program, mainly serving more meals to older adults. Older adults will be able to socialize with youth while enjoying meals as well as participating in multigenerational social activities. Our expected turnout for these events is 45 for the first few and building to 60 after the program is established and word spreads.
