SUBJECT: Approve Resolution No. 2023-20 of the city council of the City of Patterson Approving Adoption of National Public Works Week (npww) celebration on May 21st – May 27th, 2023 for the City of Patterson.

RECOMMENDATION
Motion to Approve Resolution No. 2023-20 of the city council of the City of Patterson Approving Adoption of National Public Works Week (npww) celebration on May 21st – May 27th, 2023 for the City of Patterson.

BACKGROUND
National Public Works Week (NPWW) is a celebration of the many men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works.

Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in 1960, NPWW calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. The Week seeks to enhance the prestige of the often-unsung heroes of our society-the professionals who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.

National Public Works Week is observed each year during May. This year’s week is May 21 - 27, 2023 and the theme is “Connecting the World through Public Works.” Through NPWW and other efforts, APWA seeks to raise the public’s awareness of public works issues and to increase confidence in public works employees who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for present and future generations.

ANALYSIS
For this year’s Public Works Week event, Public Works staff will be bringing their events to the schools. This year, staff will visit Patterson High School to educate the teens about the services provided by the department and to introduce them to the various careers in the public sector. The city is working towards a job shadowing pilot program to allow for our future leaders to have hands on experience working for the Public Works Department. They will gain valuable experiences and expand their horizon for career development.

Additionally, staff will be distributing information about National Public Works week through an electronic platform (for example, City website, Facebook, and other means that are available).

The goal is to educate the community and provide resources about Public Works and various environmental programs that are administered by the City, for example Water Conservation, FOG (Fats, Oils and Grease), Storm Water Management, and Solid Waste (Recycling) Management.

FISCAL IMPACT
Costs include purchasing promotional items for these various environmental programs (FOG, Water Conservation, Recycling, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention). The costs for this item have been budgeted and approved in FY 2022/23. No budget impact associated with this item.
