AFFORDABLE HOUSING MONTH – MAY 2025
WHEREAS, affordable housing is one of the cornerstones of democracy and our communities thrive when all members of our community have a place to call home; and WHEREAS, each year, thousands of Petaluma community members struggle to find an affordable home in one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation; and WHEREAS, both the City of Petaluma’s General Plan and Housing Element support and encourage the development of affordable housing projects and programs and the City is committed to safe, stable, and affordable housing for all its residents; and WHEREAS, the strength of the Petaluma community and economy depends on providing access to housing options that allow current and future residents of all income levels and ethnicities to live where they work; and
WHEREAS, affordable housing near employment centers and transit reduces traffic congestion, air pollution, and emissions, and lowers housing and transportation costs for local workers; and
WHEREAS, organizations throughout Petaluma are dedicated to providing safe, stable, permanent and affordable housing for all members of the community and are collaboratively working to bring the need for affordable housing to the forefront of discussion in Petaluma; and WHEREAS, these organizations are encouraged to partner with local agencies and community members to recognize Affordable Housing Month, which supports the sharing of best practices, opportunities, and solutions to provide affordable housing that is the right of all individuals.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED , that I, Kevin McDonnell, Mayor of Petaluma, along with members of the Petaluma City Council, proclaim May 202 5, as Affordable Housing Month.
