Intuitive operation:
• A unique flexible Image window (patent pending)
allows any combination of video window sizes and
layouts without the need of pre-configured layouts
• Any live Image pane can be switched to instant
playback (not valid for transcoded streams)
• Multiple instant playback Image panes
• Image panes can display live video, instant playback
video, text documents, maps, or web pages

from site maps, Logical Tree, or Favorites Tree
• Decoders can be organized in Monitor Walls from
within Operator Client Monitor Walls can be
controlled without connection to Management Server
• Control of analog monitors connected to decoders via
drag and drop
Efficient surveillance:
• Favorites tree can be individually configured per user • Call up Favorites with a click. Include complete views with Image pane layouts and camera assignments
• Intelligent tracking enables the camera to assist the operator by following an automatically or manually
selected object (PTZ camera or fixed cameras).
• Zoomable sitemaps with links, devices, sequences,
and Command Scripts provide excellent overview
• Automatic map positioning of a camera in a map
when this camera is selected
• Two audio listening options – selected channel only,
or multiple simultaneous channels

• When operating from a remote access, the operator
can retrieve Live and Playback via low bandwidth
using transcoded video or TCP for reliable connection
(Live Mode). Using Region of Interest further saves
network bandwidth when zooming into a section of
the camera image.

Efficient response:
• IVA is state-of-the-art intelligent video analysis that reliably detects, tracks, and analyzes moving objects
while suppressing unwanted alarms from spurious
sources in the image.
• Priority threshold defined for each operator group for escalation management
3 | Bosch Video Management System 6.0

• Alarms displayed in separate alarm window
• Up to 5 Image panes per alarm with live or playback
video, sitemaps, documents, or web pages displayed
in an “alarm row”, with highest priority alarms on top
• Audio file per alarm
• Workflow with user instructions and user comments,
optionally forced before clearing
• Email or SMS notification on alarm
• Alarm display on Monitor Wall
• Alarm auto clear options either time or state
dependent
Efficient investigation:
• Forensic Search allows the usage of Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA) algorithms on the recorded video
• Motion search in recordings allows easy locating of
changes in selected areas
• Sophisticated multi-camera Timeline allows easy,
graphical searching of recorded video
• Bookmarks in Live and Playback Mode for easy
investigation and export of recordings
• Selected clips can be exported to DVD, network
drives, or USB sticks with a few mouse clicks
• The operator can search for text data to quickly find the corresponding recordings.
• Text data is delivered by systems like foyer card
readers, automatic teller machines, point of sales,
petrol stations or Automatic Number Plate
Recognition.

Text data contains textual transaction data like
account numbers and bank routing codes. The text
data is stored within the Logbook as well as in the
recordings.

VideoXpert is a video management solution designed to fit surveillance operations of any size. Whether your operation has 100 cameras or 10,000, VideoXpert presents a solution to display, record, and manage your video resources.

VideoXpert servers can be clustered to provide redundancy and scalability within a single environment, enabling the system to grow in tune with your surveillance needs. As you add cameras, users, or recording devices, you can add servers and storage, enabling the system to support the additional resources and perform to your expectations. VideoXpert Ultimate can even aggregate other VideoXpert systems, tying multiple VideoXpert systems into a single interface. Through aggregation, administrators can build and maintain a concerted video management system containing multiple sites.

Designed for Windows platforms, VideoXpert is easy to install, quick to setup, and should be familiar to most users. The system supports unicast and multicast transmission modes, making it easy to adapt to your current network scheme. Simplified interfaces ensure that users can adopt and use the system with relative ease. From the Webbased Admin Portal, you can configure the system, manage the database of devices, configure users and permissions, and assign cameras to recording devices. Through the Ops Center software, operators gain access to high quality video and powerful investigative tools.

Administrators can migrate current Endura and Digital Sentry hardware and environments to VideoXpert, re-purposing hardware and reusing current video management infrastructures while gaining the benefits of VideoXpert. VideoXpert can also utilize NSM5200 and Digital Sentry storage hardware as recording solutions, preserving the video stored on those devices while providing access to VideoXpert features.

As distributed systems, VideoXpert Ultimate and Enterprise architecture ensure that there is no single point of failure that would compromise the system or video recording services. The system is designed with multiple levels of redundancy – through both purposebuilt hardware and sophisticated failover and redundant recording schemes – maximizing system uptime. The architecture allows individual components to continue operating in the event of failures elsewhere in the system.

VideoXpert can integrate with physical security systems and other building systems to deliver situational awareness and control. Built around open standards, VideoXpert includes a complete application programing interface (API), software development kits (SDKs), and dedicated technical support, allowing other systems’ manufacturers to develop interfaces leveraging VideoXpert’s capabilities.

VideoXpert also supports third-party IP cameras, allowing users to choose across hundreds of camera options from Pelco and third-party partners when configuring a system.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
VideoXpert consists of four major components: Core, Media Gateway, Ops Center, and Storage Server. The Core performs central management operations, maintaining the system database, administering user rights and permissions, routing traffic, and other central operations. The Media Gateway handles all requests for video, ensuring that users at all levels of network access, LAN, WAN and even cellular, receive the right type of video for their application.

The Ops Center Client is the operator console, providing an intuitive, but powerful interface from which users can access and investigate video throughout the system. The Storage Server (VXS) records video and delivers recorded video to users.

CORE
The Core is the heart of the VideoXpert system, it maintains the database of cameras and recording devices. The Core also hosts a convenient Web interface called the Admin Portal, from which you can configure and manage the system. Through the Admin Portal, you can administer user accounts and permissions, determining the system functions and devices users can access. You can create and assign “tags” to quickly organize cameras and devices within the system. You can also configure and respond to events within the system.

The Core browser provides basic access to video streaming resources, ensuring that users with appropriate permissions can view video from the system even without a hard client, using just a standard web browser.

MEDIA GATEWAY
The Media Gateway routes video traffic to appropriate users as requested. When a user requests a video stream, the Core fields the request and determines whether the user possesses the appropriate permissions to view the video stream. If the user can view the stream, the Media Gateway connects the user with the appropriate device — camera, encoder, or recorder as necessary.

Like Core servers, Media Gateways can be added to VideoXpert modularly, allowing a system with 1000 cameras to support 20 users, or a system with 100 cameras to support 200 users. You can add Media Gateways to the system in tune with media delivery needs.

CORE/MEDIA GATEWAY COMBINATION
While you can leverage separate Core and Media Gateway servers for systems of sufficient scale, most systems can easily support a single server acting as a combined, Core and Media Gateway for your VideoXpert server. The double-duty server provides the complete range of VideoXpert functionality that you would expect for systems with fewer than 2000 cameras and 100 simultaneous users.

OPS CENTER
The Ops Center is a Windows-based application, providing an optimal environment from which users can watch live and recorded video. With the support of Enhanced Decoders, the Ops Center supports up to six monitors, each capable of displaying up to 16 video streams simultaneously. Through the Ops Center, users can configure and recall complete workspaces, enabling operators to quickly log in and get to work.

The application provides mechanisms to sort cameras by tags and other criteria, making it easy for users to find the cameras they need.

Users can switch between live and recorded video on the fly, ensuring a seamless viewing experience. With appropriate permissions, users can also share workspaces and even use the same tabs simultaneously, enabling collaboration within your surveillance operations.

The Ops Center also provides an Investigation Mode, through which users can create playlists from multiple video clips encompassing important scenes from an investigation. Users can export and encrypt their investigations, storing clips relevant to their investigation independent of the system’s network video storage for evidentiary safe-keeping and quick access.

The Ops Center supports modular plug-ins, exposing additional functionality for operators as required by your surveillance operations. The Mapping plug-in enables operators to arrange and find cameras on maps. Through mapping, operators can find and the camera providing the view they need, when they need it. The PlateSmart plug-in exposes license plate numbers, to track vehicles as they come and go. The eConnect plug-in displays real-time gaming information as a video overlay.

STORAGE
VideoXpert Storage (VXS) is a RAID 6, high-availability recording platform that captures recorded video for your VideoXpert system.

The system’s operating system is contained on an SSD, freeing more space for video and ensuring higher reliability; hard drives belonging to the RAID array are front-loading, making it easy to remove and replace failed drives. Storage servers also maintain performance levels in both normal and RAID error conditions, preventing dips in performance and ensuring that users can always obtain the video they need through VideoXpert.

VideoXpert Storage natively supports third-party IP cameras via ONVIF S and driver packages, so you can bring your cameras into VideoXpert without expensive translation interfaces.

You can configure Storage through the same Web interface you use to configure the rest of your VideoXpert system, making it easy to set recording schedules and assign cameras to your storage servers.

Storage supports motion, alarm, and bump-on-alarm style recording, so you can always capture events relevant to your environment at high quality. Storage also supports redundant recording, ensuring that VideoXpert continues recording video even if a single Storage server falls offline.

SYSTEM TOPOLOGY
VideoXpert Ultimate allows for expansion at any level of your security environment. Your system begins with a single server hosting the Core and Media Gateway. In addition your system requires the OPS Center and Storage Server. As your surveillance needs grow, you can add servers to expand modularly within a single environment, or you can aggregate multiple VideoXpert systems to provide a single point of access for distributed video management networks.

VIDEOXPERT ACCESSORY SERVER
You can install the VideoXpert Accessory Server to provide NTP, basic DHCP, active failover, and load balancing services for smaller networks. The Accessory Server offers a native, multipurpose solution to control your time and addressing services from within VideoXpert.

When acting as a load balancer, the Accessory Server bridges multiple Core/Media Gateway (CMG) servers, optimizing performance and providing redundancy for your VideoXpert network. With the Accessory Server, you can easily increase your VideoXpert network’s capacity and ensure the system’s uptime so that users always have access to video.

OPERATOR WORKSPACE TOPOLOGY
The Ops Center supports up to six monitors: one connected directly to the Ops Center, and the other five driven independently by Enhanced Decoders.

The Enhanced Decoders enable each monitor connected through a workstation to display up to 16 video streams (up to 6 1080p streams) while maintaining a seamless user experience.

Enhanced Decoder-driven monitors operate just like native monitors; users can move windows across monitors seamlessly. But, when the user requests a video stream or plug-in, the Enhanced Decoder communicates directly with VideoXpert servers to get and decode video. This enables operators to maximize the display-capabilities of the Ops Center without complicating the user experience.

ADVANCED OPERATOR CONTROLS
In addition to the standard keyboard and mouse, Ops Center workstations support an Enhanced Keyboard, and Enhanced Mouse, and the KBD5000.The Enhanced keyboard includes programmable keys to which operators can map shortcuts to their favorite tabs and workspaces; The new Enhanced Mouse or your existing KBD5000 are mapped to the full range of Ops Center controls; an operator can perform any and all operations using either control.

SOFTWARE LICENSES, SERVERS, AND WORKSTATION MODELS
Use the following table to create a model number for your VideoXpert hardware and/or software package. Your model number consists of the class of your VideoXpert environment (enterprise or ultimate), the model, and the country-code (where applicable). Models ending in US and EUK include power cords for their respective regions; models without a country code do not. Power cords are available as separate accessories. For example, an Enterprise Core server for Europe is labeled E1-COR-SVREUK.

While Pelco servers, workstations, and recorders do not require activation licenses, certain software features and platform upgrades do. Aggregated cameras and cameras recorded to VideoXpert Storage require a single license per channel. Consult Pelco Sales to ensure you obtain all the necessary equipment and licenses required to support your environment.

Due to the complexity of network and system design for larger distributions, VideoXpert Ultimate requires either training certification, or that the installation be performed by Pelco Professional Services. While not required for Enterprise distributions, it is strongly recommended that system installers and administrators be Pelcocertified.

SHARED EVENT HANDLING
All events generated within the Ocularis system, or
detected by external/add-on devices, are entered
in a dynamically-updated list, shared among all
authorized users. Users are able to access, investigate and handle events directly from a dedicated event handling interface, with an on-map indicator
of the camera that triggered the event and dual
video panes displaying the recorded event and a
live stream. Handled events may be accessed by
the administrator for continued handling.

POWERED BY WI-FI RE-ID
SensID Leverages the Power of Sensys Networks
• Cloud-based solution eases deployment
• Leverages and pairs with existing Sensys
Networks hardware
• Simple installation, simple upgrades
• No calibration or system tuning required
SensID is the only Bluetooth® or Wi-Fi travel time

Origin / Destination
Key Features of SensID
• Cost effective travel times and congestion management • Pole mounted for ease of installation
• Bluetooth or Wi-Fi supported
• Detection-enabled
• Platform for future enhancements
SensID is built on the proven Sensys Networks wireless
platform. As such, agencies can easily add arterial
performance measures such as volume, occupancy,
and speed. Or, agencies can add signal actuation
to an existing SensID installation, including bicycle
detection. Agencies can even add turning movement counts plus other phase-based intersection performance measures. All on the same cabinet
hardware, and all sharing central server software.

Key Reports Available in SensID
• Corridor Travel Times
• Intersection delay analysis
• Congestion mapping
• Origin / Destination analysis
SensID is a cloud-based system that utilizes maps to
provide flexible and easy-to-use reports. Agencies
access these reports using web browsers, while
SensID reliably manages the collection, processing,
and storage of all congestion data. SensID generates
travel time and speed reports, intersection delay
reports, and origin-destination patterns for user configured routes and time periods. The report data can be exported for further use.

SensID Leverages Power of Wi-Fi
• Better suited for real time applications
• Does not require discoverable mode
• More and more devices using Wi-Fi
• Uniquely allows measurement of delay at intersection
Unlike Bluetooth-only travel time systems, SensID supports either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi, the full potential of wireless congestion management is realized. With a match rate ten times that of Bluetooth, SensID’s Wi-Fi option allows real-time updates for active traffic management. Plus, using the signal strength not offered by Bluetooth, SensID’s Wi-Fi option generates reports on delay at the intersection.

At the core of a city's infrastructure, street lights keep citizens safe, illuminating streets, pathways, parks, and neighborhoods after dark. Today's street lights are a lot to manage, and tend to function inefficiently by wasting energy when they are on. Switching to networked LEDs and photocells produce major benefits, helping cities save money, improve efficiency, and establish a vital public service.

Keeping streets lit is a necessary and an enormous expense. Today's typical high-intensity discharge lamps (HIDs) use too much energy and have a limited life span.

Welcome to the AWS Storage Gateway User Guide. AWS Storage Gateway connects an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage to provide seamless integration with data security features between your on-premises IT environment and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) storage infrastructure. You can use the service to store data in the AWS cloud for scalable and cost-effective storage that helps maintain data security. AWS Storage Gateway offers both volume-based and tapebased storage solutions:
• Volume gateways – Volume gateways provide cloud-backed storage volumes that you can mount as Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) devices from your on-premises application servers. The gateway supports the following volume configurations:
• Gateway-cached volumes – You store your data in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and retain a copy of frequently accessed data subsets locally. Gateway-cached volumes offer a substantial cost savings on primary storage and minimize the need to scale your storage onpremises. You also retain low-latency access to your frequently accessed data. • Gateway-stored volumes – If you need low-latency access to your entire data set, you can configure your on-premises gateway to store all your data locally and then asynchronously back up point-in-time snapshots of this data to Amazon S3. This configuration provides durable and inexpensive off-site backups that you can recover to your local data center or Amazon EC2. For example, if you need replacement capacity for disaster recovery, you can recover the backups to Amazon EC2.
• Gateway–virtual tape library (VTL) – You can cost-effectively and durably archive backup data in Amazon Glacier. Gateway-VTL provides a virtual tape infrastructure that scales seamlessly with your business needs and eliminates the operational burden of provisioning, scaling, and maintaining a physical tape infrastructure.

You may choose to run AWS Storage Gateway either on-premises, as a virtual machine (VM) appliance, or in AWS, as an EC2 instance. You deploy your gateway on an EC2 instance to provision iSCSI storage volumes in AWS. Gateways hosted on EC2 instances can be used for disaster recovery, data mirroring, and providing storage for applications hosted on Amazon EC2.

Gateway-Cached Volume Architecture
Gateway-cached volumes let you use Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as your primary data storage while retaining frequently accessed data locally in your storage gateway. Gateway-cached volumes minimize the need to scale your on-premises storage infrastructure, while still providing your applications with low-latency access to their frequently accessed data. You can create storage volumes up to 32 TiB in size and attach to them as iSCSI devices from your on-premises application servers.

Your gateway stores data that you write to these volumes in Amazon S3 and retains recently read data in your on-premises storage gateway's cache and upload buffer storage.

Gateway-cached volumes can range from 1 GiB to 32 TiB in size and must be rounded to the nearest GiB. Each gateway configured for gateway-cached volumes can support up to 32 volumes for a total maximum storage volume of 1,024 TiB (1 PiB).

In the gateway-cached volume solution, AWS Storage Gateway stores all your on-premises application data in a storage volume in Amazon S3.

The following diagram provides an overview of the AWS Storage Gateway-cached volume deployment.

After you've installed the AWS Storage Gateway software appliance—the virtual machine (VM)—on a host in your data center and activated it, you can use the AWS Management Console to provision storage volumes backed by Amazon S3. You can also provision storage volumes programmatically using the AWS Storage Gateway API or the AWS SDK libraries. You then mount these storage volumes to your on-premises application servers as iSCSI devices.

You also allocate disks on-premises for the VM. These on-premises disks serve the following purposes:
• Disks for use by the gateway as cache storage – As your applications write data to the storage volumes in AWS, the gateway initially stores the data on the on-premises disks referred to as cache storage before uploading the data to Amazon S3. The cache storage acts as the on-premises durable store for data that is waiting to upload to Amazon S3 from the upload buffer.

The cache storage also lets the gateway store your application's recently accessed data on-premises for low-latency access. If your application requests data, the gateway first checks the cache storage for the data before checking Amazon S3.

API Version 2013-06-30
3 AWS Storage Gateway User Guide
Volume Gateway Architecture (GatewayCached and Gateway-Stored) You can use the following guidelines to determine the amount of disk space to allocate for cache storage. Generally, you should allocate at least 20 percent of your existing file store size as cache storage. Cache storage should also be larger than the upload buffer. This latter guideline helps ensure cache storage is large enough to persistently hold all data in the upload buffer that has not yet been uploaded to Amazon S3.
• Disks for use by the gateway as the upload buffer – To prepare for upload to Amazon S3, your gateway also stores incoming data in a staging area, referred to as an upload buffer. Your gateway uploads this buffer data over an encrypted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection to AWS, where it is stored encrypted in Amazon S3.

You can take incremental backups, called snapshots, of your storage volumes in Amazon S3. These point-in-time snapshots are also stored in Amazon S3 as Amazon EBS snapshots. When you take a new snapshot, only the data that has changed since your last snapshot is stored. You can initiate snapshots on a scheduled or one-time basis. When you delete a snapshot, only the data not needed for any other snapshots is removed.

You can restore an Amazon EBS snapshot to a gateway storage volume if you need to recover a backup of your data. Alternatively, for snapshots up to 16 TiB in size, you can use the snapshot as a starting point for a new Amazon EBS volume. You can then attach this new Amazon EBS volume to an Amazon EC2 instance.

All gateway-cached volume data and snapshot data is stored in Amazon S3 encrypted at rest using server-side encryption (SSE). However, you cannot access this data with the Amazon S3 API or other tools such as the Amazon S3 console.

Gateway-Stored Volume Architecture
Gateway-stored volumes let you store your primary data locally, while asynchronously backing up that data to AWS. Gateway-stored volumes provide your on-premises applications with low-latency access to their entire datasets, while providing durable, off-site backups. You can create storage volumes and mount them as iSCSI devices from your on-premises application servers. Data written to your gateway-stored volumes is stored on your on-premises storage hardware. This data is asynchronously backed up to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) in the form of Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots.

Gateway-stored volumes can range from 1 GiB to 16 TiB in size and must be rounded to the nearest GiB. Each gateway configured for gateway-stored volumes can support up to 32 volumes and a total volume storage of 512 TiB (0.5 PiB).

In the gateway-stored volume solution, you maintain your volume storage on-premises in your data center. That is, you store all your application data on your on-premises storage hardware. Then, using features that help maintain data security, the gateway uploads data to the AWS cloud for cost-effective backup and rapid disaster recovery. This solution is ideal if you want to keep data locally on-premises, because you need to have low-latency access to all your data, and also to maintain backups in AWS.

The following diagram provides an overview of the AWS Storage Gateway–stored volume deployment.

4 AWS Storage Gateway User Guide
Gateway-VTL Architecture
After you've installed the AWS Storage Gateway software appliance—the virtual machine (VM)—on a host in your data center and activated it, you can create gateway storage volumes and map them to on-premises direct-attached storage (DAS) or storage area network (SAN) disks. You can start with either new disks or disks already holding data. You can then mount these storage volumes to your on-premises application servers as iSCSI devices. As your on-premises applications write data to and read data from a gateway's storage volume, this data is stored and retrieved from the volume's assigned disk.

To prepare data for upload to Amazon S3, your gateway also stores incoming data in a staging area, referred to as an upload buffer. You can use on-premises DAS or SAN disks for working storage.

Your gateway uploads data from the upload buffer over an encrypted Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection to the AWS Storage Gateway service running in the AWS cloud. The service then stores the data encrypted in Amazon S3.

You can take incremental backups, called snapshots, of your storage volumes. The gateway stores these snapshots in Amazon S3 as Amazon EBS snapshots. When you take a new snapshot, only the data that has changed since your last snapshot is stored. You can initiate snapshots on a scheduled or one-time basis. When you delete a snapshot, only the data not needed for any other snapshot is removed.

You can restore an Amazon EBS snapshot to an on-premises gateway storage volume if you need to recover a backup of your data. You can also use the snapshot as a starting point for a new Amazon EBS volume, which you can then attach to an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance.

Gateway–Virtual Tape Library (Gateway-VTL)
Architecture
Gateway-VTL offers a durable, cost-effective solution to archive your data in the AWS cloud. The VTL interface it provides lets you leverage your existing tape-based backup application infrastructure to store data on virtual tape cartridges that you create on your gateway-VTL. Each gateway-VTL is preconfigured with a media changer and tape drives, which are available to your existing client backup applications as iSCSI devices. You add tape cartridges as you need to archive your data.

The following diagram provides an overview of the AWS Storage Gateway–VTL deployment.

API Version 2013-06-30
5 AWS Storage Gateway User Guide
Gateway-VTL Architecture
The diagram identifies the following gateway-VTL components:
• Virtual tape – Virtual tape is analogous to a physical tape cartridge. However, virtual tape data is stored in the AWS cloud. Like physical tapes, virtual tapes can be blank or can have data written on them. You can create virtual tapes either by using the AWS Storage Gateway console or programmatically by using the AWS Storage Gateway API. Each gateway can contain up to 1500 tapes or up to 1 PiB of total tape data at a time. The size of each virtual tape, which you can configure when you create the tape, is between 100 GiB and 2.5 TiB. • Virtual tape library (VTL) – A VTL is analogous to a physical tape library available on-premises with robotic arms and tape drives, including the collection of virtual tapes stored within the library. Each gateway-VTL comes with one VTL.

The virtual tapes that you create appear in your gateway's VTL. Tapes in the VTL are backed up by Amazon S3. As your backup software writes data to the gateway, the gateway stores data locally and then asynchronously uploads it to virtual tapes in your VTL—that is, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).
• Tape drive – A VTL tape drive is analogous to a physical tape drive that can perform I/O and seek operations on a tape. Each VTL comes with a set of 10 tape drives, which are available to your backup application as iSCSI devices.
• Media changer – A VTL media changer is analogous to a robot that moves tapes around in a physical tape library's storage slots and tape drives. Each VTL comes with one media changer, which is available to your backup application as an iSCSI device. • Virtual tape shelf (VTS) – A VTS is analogous to an off-site tape holding facility. You can archive tapes from your gateway's VTL to the VTS and, if needed, retrieve tapes from the VTS back to your gateway's VTL.
• Archiving tapes – When your backup software ejects a tape, your gateway moves the tape to the VTS for long-term storage. The VTS is located in the AWS region in which you activated the API Version 2013-06-30
6 AWS Storage Gateway User Guide
Available AWS Regions
gateway. Tapes in the VTS are stored in Amazon Glacier, an extremely low-cost storage service for data archiving and backup. For more information, go to Amazon Glacier. • Retrieving tapes – Tapes archived to the VTS cannot be read directly. To read an archived tape, you must first retrieve it to your gateway-VTL either by using the AWS Storage Gateway console or by using the AWS Storage Gateway API. A retrieved tape will be available in your VTL in about 24 hours.

You have one VTS in your account per AWS region. For example, if you create multiple gateways in the same AWS region, one VTS will hold ejected tapes for all the gateways. If you create gateways in different AWS regions, you will have one VTS per AWS region.

After you deploy and activate a gateway-VTL, you mount the virtual tape drives and media changer on your on-premises application servers as iSCSI devices. You create virtual tapes as needed and then use your existing backup software application to write data to the virtual tapes. The media changer loads and unloads the virtual tapes into the virtual tape drives for read and write operations.

Allocating Local Disks for the Gateway VM
Your gateway VM will need local disks, which you allocate for the following purposes:
• Cache storage – The cache storage acts as the durable store for data that is waiting to upload to Amazon S3 from the upload buffer.

If your application reads data from a virtual tape, the gateway saves the data to the cache storage.

The gateway stores recently accessed data in the cache storage for low-latency access. If your application requests tape data, the gateway first checks the cache storage for the data before downloading the data from AWS.
• Upload buffer – The upload buffer provides a staging area for the gateway before it uploads the data to a virtual tape. The upload buffer is also critical for creating recovery points that you can use to recover tapes from unexpected failures. For more information, see You Need to Recover a Virtual Tape from a Malfunctioning Gateway-VTL (p. 244).

As your backup application writes data to your gateway, the gateway copies data to both the cache storage and the upload buffer before acknowledging completion of the write operation to your backup application.

For guidelines to determine the amount of disk space you should allocate for the cache storage and upload buffer, see Deciding the Amount of Local Disk Storage (p. 350).

9 On-premise vs.
cloud-based solutions
A dilemma for businesses
On-premise vs. cloud-based solutions
www.gfi.com
Introduction
Consider any technology today, and you will likely find a “cloud” version that is just perfect for your needs, at least as far as the vendor is concerned. Cloud-based solutions and cloud computing in general seem to be what everyone is talking about - what everyone desires - and any company providing any sort of software or service wants to have a cloud version since, if it’s in the cloud, it must be better, right? Well, maybe, and maybe not. For the business trying to decide which solutions are right for their needs, understanding what the key differences are, where one is better than the other, and sometimes, more importantly, where one is worse than the other is critical in ensuring the decision maker for the company makes the right choice for the company.

That may or may not be the right choice for the vendor you are working with, so here’s what we hope is some unbiased advice to help you choose. Let’s start with some definitions.

On-premise offerings
On-premises solutions, sometimes shortened to “on-prem,” are those that are deployed in the traditional manner. Servers are acquired, operating systems are installed, other hardware may be involved, but all of that lives within your four walls, or the walls of your datacenter. You can reach out and touch on-prem solutions. You’re responsible for them, to at least some degree. You might virtualize the servers, but the physical hosts are still there. You might outsource management to a service integrator, but you still provide the physical security, the electricity, and the balance sheet entries to carry the assets. You might have the hardware in a cage within a shared datacenter or hosting facility, but they are still tangible, physical assets for which you are responsible.

Hosted offerings
Hosted solutions are those that a service provider offers you within their datacenters or other facilities. They are usually contracted for a period of time, and are built for you specifically.

They may be hosted in more than one location, but the locations are fixed and known, and the resources are largely yours. When a hosting provider hosts solutions for you, they are responsible for whatever it is that they are offering you. If it’s a datacenter, they provide the electricity, physical security, and perhaps core networking functions. If it’s an application hosting provider, they provide all the support and configuration for the app. In either case, you are paying for something that others are providing you. You are largely hands off.

If it’s in the cloud, it must
be better, right? Well,
maybe, and maybe not.

On-premise vs. cloud-based solutions
www.gfi.com
Cloud offerings
Hosted offerings may sound like cloud offerings, but there are some critical differences to understand.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) established five essential characteristics of cloud computing that should help you understand the primary differences. They are:

1. On-demand self-service: once services are established, the customer should be able to provision new users, services, virtual machines, etc. without involving the cloud service provider.

2. Broad network access: cloud services are typically accessed over the Internet, as opposed to being on an internal network accessible only over private connections.

3. Resource pooling: there is some degree of shared resources from which services draw as needed.

4. Rapid elasticity: customers’ needs may expand or contract, and the service will expand or contract with those needs.

5. Measured service: customers are billed based on some measured consumption. That could be licenses, or CPU cycles, or Gigabytes of storage consumed, or number of mailboxes; whatever the thing measured, that is how customers are billed. You pay for what you use.

NIST also has standardized around three types of service models. They are

1. Software as a Service (SaaS): Applications that could be email, CRM, cloud storage, etc.

2. Platform as a Service (PaaS): This includes web sites, web applications, etc.

3. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Typically, virtual machines hosted in the cloud and made available to the customer, who maintains the operating system on up.

Finally, NIST has defined four deployment models. They are

1. Private cloud: It’s mine, all mine, and not yours. The private cloud is used exclusively by one user.

2. Community cloud: It’s yours and mine, but not his, because he isn’t one of us.

Meaning the cloud is used exclusively by a group of people or a community.

3. Public cloud: It’s yours, mine, his, and anyone else who is willing to pay for it. Used openly by the general public.

4. Hybrid cloud: This part is yours, and that part is mine, and we will connect them together in some way. It’s made up of two or more deployment models (private, community and public) within the same organization.

You can read more about the NIST definitions at
http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/nistpubs/800-145/SP800-145.pdf.

On-premise vs. cloud-based solutions
www.gfi.com
Which is best?
Like so many IT questions, the answer is “it depends,”and what it depends on is largely dependent upon a number of things about your company. If you have the necessary expertise on staff, and sufficient resources to provision what is required, then you may want to keep it on-prem. If you have trust issues, or very unique compliance requirements, you may want to keep it on-prem. Be careful with that one though, as you may find that a cloud provider can meet your security and compliance requirements better than you can, and for less cost! If you don’t have and can’t afford the expertise on staff to maintain something, cloud based offerings should be very appealing. If you need global presence, 24x7x365 support, or extreme scale, cloud based offerings may be the only realistic way to get there for a business. Let’s look at some specific things you should consider when evaluating whether to do something on-prem or move it to the cloud.

Topic On-premises Cloud Advantage
Expertise
Top talent comes with top costs,
and niche skills may be very
expensive to attract and retain.

Cloud service providers specialize in an offering,
and staff it with the necessary expertise. Cloud
24x7x365
support and
monitoring
Monitoring systems can run 24x7,
but keeping staff around the
clock can be very expensive.

Cloud service providers monitor 24x7, but
may not monitor what is important to you,
or notify you directly in a timely fashion.

On-prem
Scale You can do anything for a cost, but can
you do everything cost-effectively?
One of the big benefits to cloud service
providers is the resource pooling. They can
afford to offer scale of services you could
not provision yourself at any cost.

Cloud
Trust When you run it yourself, you have
only to worry about yourself.

You have to trust someone sometime, and
when it comes to cloud service providers, you
are going to have to extend a lot of trust.

On-prem
Compliance
When you run it yourself, you have
to worry about ensuring compliance
with all the laws and regulations
that apply to your business.

Cloud service providers have teams
devoted to compliance, and can much more
readily meet and maintain compliance.

Trust, but verify, and you will be fine.

Cloud
SLA When there’s an outage, it is up to you
to get things back up and running.

Most cloud service providers offer financially
backed SLAs. They too will have outages, but at
least you will get credit for downtime and not have
to work around the clock to restore services.

Cloud
Understanding
your business
Only you can understand your
business as well as you do. You
know which user, customer, or
application is more important.

Cloud services are the great equalizer. Mailboxes
are mailboxes, and until you escalate, a problem
impacting your CEO and a problem impacting a
part-time employee are just equal problems.

On-prem
Security Security is critical, and you know
your assets and your people.

Security is complex, expensive, and
must be maintained 24x7. Cloud service
providers can leverage economies of scale
to provide security beyond anything you
could practically do on your own.

On-prem
Customization
When you deploy it, you can do it any
way you please, and can customize
things, add plug-ins, etc. as you see fit.

Cloud based services offer lots of choices, and
many configurable options, but they are still
going to be limited in what you can do, and
may not support all the options you want.

On-prem
Cost model
On-prem solutions involve
assets that must be purchased,
may need to be financed, and
must ultimately be replaced.

Cloud solutions are services to which you subscribe,
and as such, can be categorized as operational
expenses. There’s often great tax benefits to that.

Cloud
On-premise vs. cloud-based solutions
www.gfi.com
If you keep a flat score, it looks like a split decision, with on-prem solutions taking the advantage five times, and cloud based solutions taking the advantage the other five times. But each of these ten categories is going to be weighted differently depending upon your business, your needs, and your IT team. Weigh them based on what you think is most important for you, and then see which scores higher. You might be surprised. Here’s some more things to consider.

SMB
Small to medium sized businesses can leverage cloud-based services to get enterprise-class solutions on tighter budgets. There probably isn’t a cloud service offering that an SMB can build themselves on premise with the same budget. SMBs could embrace cloud-based solutions so they can focus on their core competencies and the things cloud service providers don’t offer, like desk side support.

Enterprise
Enterprises might be able to deploy IT solutions with equal capabilities to a cloudbased offering, but that doesn’t mean that they want to. Enterprises should focus on those things that they must deploy on-prem, like services requiring customizations, and leverage cloud-based services for the “commodity IT” things like email, CRM, etc.

The Hybrid Approach
There’s no reason to think the choice between on-prem and cloud is a mutually exclusive one.

Customers can pick and choose what works best for them. Maybe you want to keep your email system on-prem, but leverage a cloud-based service for message hygiene, continuity or archiving.

Or perhaps you will deploy your domain controllers and file and print servers on-prem, but build application and database servers in the cloud using an Infrastructure as a service provider who can provide you with computing resources for far less than you can do on your own.

Enterprises may want to deploy all their production systems on-prem, but can leverage cloud services for lab or QA purposes to easily and cost-effectively spin up systems for testing.

Whether you are more inclined to favor on-premises solutions or cloud-based solutions, don’t assume you have to choose one to the exclusion of the other. There are times where both may be the better choice, depending on circumstance the right choice is up to you. The one thing to keep in mind is that on-prem solutions may represent large capital investments, but cloud-based solutions may represent long-term subscription contracts. Weigh each option carefully, focus on doing what you do well with your existing staff first, and then look at if it makes sense to float away to the cloud! On-premise vs. cloud-based solutions

A redundant power supply system can be configured
by adding a second (optional) power source. Even if
one power supply fails, power will continue to be
supplied from the
other power supply,
so displays continue
to be operational
with no downtime.

Redundant Power Supply
Mitsubishi Electric's original LED light
source utilizes the ideal combination
of fully redundant RGB LEDs and an
air cooling system, creating perfect
display solutions for 24hr operations.

Each RGB LED maintains high image
quality even if a light element
malfunctions, thereby enhancing
reliability for various mission-critical
environments.

A "Smart Switch" function has been added to Mitsubishi
Electric display wall cubes to deliver the signal
redundancy necessary for mission-critical applications
that require round-the-clock operation. If a signal is
unexpectedly lost, the display wall automatically
switches to the alternative signal source from port-to-port within seconds after the ‘no signal’ status is detected.

This function makes it possible for users to minimize
downtime in the event of a signal source failure.

Redundant LED Smart Switch
Each display wall cube is equipped with three built-in sensors (one for each primary color) that use a color and brightness maintenance algorithm. The sensors continually monitor the individual red, green and blue output of each display wall cube, share the data with adjacent cubes, and adjust performance automatically to produce extremely accurate colors and brightness balance over the entire display. These features makes it possible to maintain image uniformity on multi-screen configurations over long periods of operation without using external software or third-party calibration computers. Furthermore, the newly developed XYZ color sensor allows multiple screens to be adjusted precisely and easily to a desired color tone. Time-based color changes in multi-screen configurations are also minimized so that image quality is maintained over a long period of time.

Dynamic Color & Brightness Balancing

At the core of Mitsubishi Electric projection technology is the DLPTM digital micro-mirror imaging chip built
with minute mirrors arranged at multiple points on a
silicon base using the most advanced semiconductor
fabrication technology available. Each micro-mirror
corresponds to a single pixel or element of the
picture. Images are produced by maneuvering these
micro-mirrors electronically.

The DLPTM chip is a reflective device with a very
high light reflection ratio, thus the chip itself retains very little to no heat. This characteristic allows still images, text data and other fixed patterns to be
displayed for long periods of time without image
retention or burn-in that tends to occur with other
display technologies or image processing methods.

An LED light source has an average service life that is approximately 10 times longer than that of conventional ultrahigh-pressure mercury lamps.

Combined with the 100,000hr, ultra-long service life of our engine fans, the average service life of Mitsubishi Electric LED display wall cubes is more than 10 years, even when operated continuously on a 24/7 basis. * With the new WE120 Series models, the LED light source lasts for 100,000 hours in all modes, including the Bright mode.

Mitsubishi Electric LED display wall cubes can thus be used 24/7 for more than 11 years virtually maintenance free.

Equipped with an original LED power control circuit, each display wall cube can be set to operate in one of four modes. As a result, command and control room operators can select the brightness level appropriate for their environment and user, avoiding user eye-fatigue over long periods of viewing time.

Over 78,000 Mitsubishi Electric display wall products have been installed in mission-critical command and control rooms around the world. Our LED projection engines and display wall cubes are designed and developed with the deep understanding and experience we gained from market feedback and from market feedback and closely listening to the diversified needs of our customers.

Mitsubishi Electric LED display wall cubes have multiple picture settings, giving customers the freedom to choose the best setting suitable for the application and content being displayed. Optimized Color is best for reproducing natural looking colors, Vivid Color realizes more striking colors in icons/symbols, and Low Color Temperature is ideal for backdrop applications in broadcasting studios.

Multiple Picture Settings
Choice of Four Brightness Modes
The LED light source eliminated the use of mercury lamps, helping us keep the environment cleaner. At the same time, the Eco mode setting lets users consume less power, reducing CO2 emissions, leaving a smaller, eco-conscious carbon footprint than conventional lamp-based systems.

Eco-conscious
Proven Performance
The LED light source offers a much wider
range of color reproduction, allowing a
larger array of vivid colors to be used for
the icons and symbols frequently used in
command and control rooms. This ultimately
makes it easier for command and control
room operators to share information.

Loss of brightness at the screen edges is no longer a problem owing to Mitsubishi Electric's innovative digital gradation circuit. Brightness is distributed evenly across the screen, ensuring the reproduction of sharp, vivid images from edge to edge on multi-screen configurations.

To compensate for the color and brightness inconsistencies on display wall cubes, Mitsubishi Electric has developed an original Color Space Control Circuit that balances and blends colors. The ratios of each primary color (red/green/blue) and other color mixtures are adjusted to provide consistent color blending and superior uniformity on multi-screen configurations.

V2X Applications Overview
Vehicle-to-Phone (V2P) Communication
Intelligent Transportation Apps for Greater Mobility and Safety Savari’s hardware product families and software stack enable a range of V2X applications, which are displayed on a vehicle’s infotainment platform or on the driver’s tablet or smartphone.

V2X applications include Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Phone (V2P) applications, all aimed at increasing traffic safety and efficiency. The goal is to eliminate traffic-related fatalities by deploying life-saving V2X applications in all cars.

A rich feature set hat makes Savari’s offering unique:

Vehicle-to-Phone Applications: SmartCross
The V2P approach encompasses a broad set of road users, including pedestrians, children being pushed in strollers, people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, passengers embarking and disembarking buses and trains, and people riding bicycles.

Savari’s V2P applications focus on making pedestrians and bicyclists active participants in the V2X landscape, especially in Smart City scenarios. Pedestrians and bicyclists are connected to vehicles and traffic lights through their smartphones.

Through Savari’s cloud solution, pedestrians and bicyclists are connected to the V2X environment, whether using DSRC or non-DSRC phones.

Savari features two pedestrian applications today. First, it alerts drivers of vehicles at the intersection of an approaching and distracted pedestrian violating the do-not-cross signs or crossing the road in unmarked areas. The alert appears on the car’s infotainment display or the driver’s tablet or smartphone, giving the driver life-saving reaction time.

Second, Savari, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) , has designed and developed SmartCross, an application that interfaces with traffic signal systems. By communicating with the intersection traffic signal controller, the pedestrian requests a walk phase to cross the road. In addition to providing an alert when it’s safe to walk, the application also provides automatic extension of the walk phase, which could be critical and life-saving to a mobility- or visually-impaired individual.

The graphic to the left indicates the SmartCross ecosystem, which is SAE J2735 compliant and compatible with the CVRIA architecture. The RoadSide-Unit (RSU) is typically linked to the traffic light controller via an Ethernet connection.

Savari’s smartphone application is fully compatible with cellular/WiFi and DSRC-enabled smartphones. • Radio agnostic solutions supporting leading radio vendors • Numerous applications
• Trial bed and market experience
• Buit-in IP for positioning, map matching, target
filtering and tracking at multiple levels
• Built-in IP for accurate situational awareness

INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 1 Document Overview
This document serves to summarize the traffic data quality validations of INRIX data performed by the University of Maryland on behalf of the I-95 Corridor Coalition during the initial Vehicle Probe Project (VPP). The first VPP spanned six years, from Summer 2008 to Summer 2014,1and established numerous industry firsts, several of which are highlighted in the next section.

Among these industry firsts is establishing and conducting a process to evaluate the quality of the traffic data provided. Following a consistent methodology, 42 site tests were conducted in 11 states over six years to determine and monitor the quality of data INRIX provided under the VPP. All documentation related to quality requirements, validation testing methodology, and site test results are publicly available on the Coalition’s web site.2
This document is created and published by INRIX and serves to:

1. Aggregate dozens of different reports regarding the methodology and results of VPP data validation into a single summary document.

2. Demonstrate how INRIX data consistently met, and typically far exceeded, the specified data quality requirements established in the VPP contract.

3. Illustrate how INRIX data improved in quality over time.

1 There is a follow-on project, VPPII, which started in July 2014 2 Coalition’s VPP Page: http://www.i95coalition.org/i95/VehicleProbe/tabid/219/Default.aspx (see Data Validation tab).

Results
 INRIX was never penalized for data quality during the life of the VPP.  Speed Error and Speed Bias results met quality specifications from the outset of the project.
 Speed Error results improved 57% in heavy congestion from 2008-09 to 2012-13.  Speed Error results improved 46% in moderate congestion from 2008-09 to 2012-13.  Speed Bias results improved 87% overall from 2008-09 to 2012-13.  Many of the site test locations later in the VPP were designed to be more challenging to report accurately than many of the initial site test locations, demonstrating high quality data was provided by INRIX in the toughest of scenarios.

INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 2 VPP Data Quality Summary
Throughout the VPP, INRIX data was subjected to the world’s largest ongoing validation of freeway data accuracy. Over more than five years, 42 validation tests have been conducted in 11 states in a full range of scenarios—urban/rural, overnight work zones, beach and holiday weekends, snowstorms, tunnels, parkways without commercial vehicle traffic, etc.

Table 1 summarizes all 42 site tests in a single table (see page 3, with links to each published report included in the table). In total during the VPP, INRIX data was tested over five years, on over 900 miles of freeways in over 430 discrete segments from as far south as Ft. Lauderdale, FL to as far north as Providence, RI (Figure 1 shows the site test locations across the corridor). Over 600,000 data comparisons were made across all site tests.

Figure 2 groups validations into the calendar ranges of 2008-09, 2010-11, and 2012-13 and shows the Average Absolute Speed Error (AASE). In the same time ranges, the summary Speed Error Bias (SEB) was -1.5 MPH in 2008-09, -0.7 MPH in 2010-11, and 0.2 MPH in 2012-2013.

The I-95 Corridor Coalition’s Vehicle Probe Project (VPP), the world’s largest single acquisition of real-time private sector speed/travel time data by government organizations, began as a University of Maryland (UMD) Request for Proposal in April 2007 with the contract name “Traffic Data and
Associated Services along the I-95 Corridor.” The objectives of the RFP3, published by UMD on behalf of the I-95 Corridor Coalition (the Coalition), included:
“…the Coalition is supporting a regional traffic monitoring system that acts as a continuous source of real-time transportation system status information within the Corridor. A regional traffic monitoring system will serve as a rich source of traveler information and will provide invaluable inputs to existing and future management tools…”
“…it is the intent of the Coalition to provide funding support and coordination with its members for the purpose of developing a common set of procedures for data acquisition and dissemination.

Successful offerors will be responsible for providing real-time traffic data and supporting consulting services in support of the mission of developing a regional traffic monitoring system. A three year initial project is anticipated, with a contract life in excess of three years in-place to provide the flexibility to continue, if desired, by the Coalition members.” “Real-time traffic data will support the development of seamless networks of corridor-wide traveler information systems and facilitate and support the coordination and implementation of interagency efforts in response to major incidents and special events of regional significance. Timeliness and accuracy of data are paramount to the success of these efforts.” “Data quality will be validated by an independent contractor.”

INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 5 INRIX was selected from multiple proposers by UMD and the Coalition as the sole contractor for the project in December 2007, was awarded the master contract in February 2008, and began supplying real-time data and associated services on July 1, 2008 for roughly 1,950 centerline freeway4 miles and 1,000 centerline arterial miles across six states, from New Jersey to North Carolina, including the District of Columbia. The baseline term for the VPP was three years (2008-2011), which was later extended an additional three years (2011-2014). The VPP enabled Coalition member states to add road coverage based on desire and funding availability. At its conclusion in Summer 2014, live data was being provided for over 40,000 centerline miles of roadways in ten states, including nearly 8,000 miles of freeways.

The VPP was groundbreaking in many ways, with many industry firsts:
 1st comprehensive requirements for privately sourced real-time traffic data, with a world leading validation program to test and ensure data quality.  1st pay-for-performance contract, tying payments to validated data quality and availability.  1st consistent and publicly available data use agreement giving maximum flexibility to agencies to use, store and re-use data for their purposes.
 1st use of private data to establish statewide travel times on dynamic messages signs.  1st statewide map of real-time traffic data on a state DOT's 511/travel information web site.  1st intelligent fusion of private data and available roadside sensor data on a statewide basis.  1st use of private data in a state DOT branded 511/mobile app.  1st high-definition displays of real-time traffic in shopping malls.  1st online performance monitoring and analysis tools, enabling large scale analysis with only a browser and credentials required for access.
 1st corridor-wide multi-state traffic monitoring web site, including user reported incidents, with only a browser and credentials required for access.

4 The VPP Contract defines all limited access roads as “Freeways” – this document uses the term Freeways to refer to Interstates, Turnpikes, Expressways and all limited access highways
INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 6 VPP Quality Requirements
The VPP Contract establishes two metrics for measuring the quality of speed data provided, Average Absolute Speed Error (AASE) and Speed Error Bias (SEB), to be in effect for vehicle flows exceeding 500 Vehicles per Hour in a direction of travel. Since road segments used in validation can vary in length, quality requirements based on speed rather than travel time were used to normalize the effect of varying segment lengths.

Average Absolute Speed Error (AASE)
 AASE measures the overall error in reported speeds compared to actual conditions  The contractually required AASE was below 10 MPH in each of the following speed ranges: 0-30 MPH, 30-45 MPH, 45-60 MPH and > 60 MPH
Speed Error Bias (SEB)
 SEB measures the tendency for reported speeds to be systemically faster or slower than actual conditions
 The contractually required SEB was a maximum average error of +/- 5 MPH in each of the following speed ranges: 0-30 MPH, 30-45 MPH, 45-60 MPH and > 60 MPH.

In early 2009, once the initial validations were completed (using the process defined in the next section), the Coalition established a Payment Formula Method,
5 which would reduce payments for data failing to
meet the AASE and SEB requirements shown above.

Each month since Spring 2009, payments were calculated using the rolling average of the last three completed site validations. Each of the four speed ranges received equal weight, so how data performed in circumstances when ground truth traffic was below 45 MPH counted for 50% of each monthly payment – the formula was clearly calculated to reward or penalize data quality under congested conditions.

The VPP RFP and subsequent contract placed these data quality requirements only on Freeways. Thus the official site tests, results and payment calculations were based only on Freeways. During the VPP, data was collected on interchanges and arterials in a small number of site tests, used for research purposes, and included as appropriate in the individual site tests.

The University of Maryland designed, implemented and conducted the VPP Validation Program. The Methodology was developed and proven July through September 2008 with initial validation tests in four states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey.6 Key to the VPP Validation Program was the utilization of portable Bluetooth Data Collection. Now commonly used for both temporary and permanent data collection, Bluetooth monitoring was far from mainstream in 2008. UMD and the Coalition determined that Bluetooth provided the most cost-effective method for statistically significant ground truth data collection.7
The basic concept was for portable Bluetooth readers to be deployed to coincide as near as possible to the start and end of INRIX reporting segments (during the VPP, INRIX utilized TMC codes as reporting segments) to compare ground truth as determined via Bluetooth with INRIX real-time speed/travel time data. Figure 3 illustrates the conceptual approach for Bluetooth data collection. A typical site test would collect data on 10-20 segments for 10-14 days, with segments usually ranging from one to three miles.

Figure 3: Bluetooth Operating Concept
Each site test was planned and executed in collaboration with the appropriate Coalition member agency using the process shown in Figure 4, with results published to the Coalition web site upon report completion. During the VPP, 42 site tests were completed in 11 Coalition states between July 2008 and February 2013.

INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 9 Each Bluetooth sample segment could create up to 288 specific comparison data samples in a day. In each site test, for each five minute increment that a deployed Bluetooth segment had sufficient samples (UMD determined that three or more valid Bluetooth readings traversing a reporting segment in a five minute period provided sufficient ground truth representation), the average Bluetooth speed/travel time was compared to the average INRIX provided speed/travel time. In cases where multiple INRIX TMC reporting segments were examined by a single Bluetooth reporting segment, a methodology was defined and utilized by UMD for proper comparison.8 Samples were collected 24x7 during the duration of the site test (typically two weeks as stated before). As illustrated in the next section, this approach generated huge amounts of ground truth data on each segment and enabled far greater evaluation of data quality over all hours of the day and days of the week, as well as far better apples-to-apples comparison data, than the traditional testing alternative of drive testing.

In the process established by UMD, one output of each site test were numerous “dayplots” that compared individual and aggregated Bluetooth traversal to INRIX reported travel times, with each dayplot representing a specific segment for a specific calendar day. These dayplots were made available to each member agency for their review and are available from UMD upon request.

A Guide to the Elements of the Day Plot
 The title of each dayplot provides the location as well as meta-data about the site test and the specific segment.
 The horizontal axis shows speeds by time of day, from midnight to midnight.  The vertical axis displays speed in MPH (Bluetooth traversal times are converted to speed across the segment).
 Each individual Bluetooth traversal is noted by a blue “x”, and a blue “x” with a dot indicates a reading UMD has determined in post-processing to be an outlier, which is discounted from further analysis.
 For each five minute period with three or more valid Bluetooth traversals, the mean is calculated and represented on the solid line as the ground truth mean for that time period.  To account for the statistical probability that the Bluetooth mean is the actual mean for the full stream of traffic it represents, UMD applied the standard error of means methodology, which is represented in the dayplot “Band low” and “Band high” dashed lines.  INRIX data for the five minute period is noted by a red diamond (note that while INRIX reports continuously, an INRIX data point is only present on the dayplot if there is a valid Bluetooth sample).
 To determine error, INRIX data is compared to the closest of the bands if outside the area between the high and low bands, if inside the error band, zero error is reported.  The average Bluetooth speed for a given sample determines which of the four defined speed ranges the INRIX error result populates for that time period.

8 http://www.i95coalition.org/i95/Portals/0/Public_Files/uploaded/Vehicle-Probe/I-95%20CCEstimation%20of%20Travel%20Times%20for%20Multiple%20TMC%20Segments%20-%20FINAL2.pdf INRIX | I-95 Corridor Coalition: Vehicle Probe Project Data Validation Summary 10 Figure 5 illustrates a typical dayplot, in this case from a late 2011 site test in Broward County Florida.

Many dayplots are uninteresting and show primarily free flow conditions. However, in congestion these charts provide an insightful window into the freeway segment and how well INRIX data is reflecting reality.

Each sample from each site test is rolled up first into overall segment summaries, and finally into an overall result. Exhibit 1 was extracted from the September 2011 Pennsylvania site test to illustrate segment summaries and Exhibit 2 shows the overall summary result for this site test (performed near Harrisburg, PA), the format of this table is used across all VPP site tests to summarize results. The SEM Band (shown as 1.96 SE Band in Exhibit 1) results are the contractual defined data quality results and are used throughout this report. In this site test, 514 observations occurred when ground truth speeds were below 30 MPH, and in those instances, INRIX data’s Average Absolute Speed Error (AASE) was 3.5 MPH.

3. Will the project use only hardware and communications proven elsewhere?

4. Will the project use only existing interfaces (no new interfaces to other systems)?

5. Will the project use only existing system requirements that are defined in writing?

6. Will the project use only existing operating procedures that are defined in writing?

7. Will the project use only technologies with service life longer than 2-4 years? Yes No Not Sure
If all of theabove are Yes, that is a preliminaryindicationthat your project is Low-Risk.

Part 2. Regulatory Compliance Information
Please answer each question briefly (often one paragraph is enough). If the question cannot be fully answered now, but will be answered during the project implementation, please indicate the step at which it will be answered. As you respond to each question on thisform, the field will expand as you type. Examples of SERF’s can be found at:
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/cadiv/segb/examples/del.htm (then click on “FHWA Rule/FTA Policy Compliance Documents”).

1. Identification of portions of the Regional ITS Architecture (RA) being implemented:

Instructions: Contact your MPO to get this information from your Regional ITS Architecture (“RA”). In the RA, the project might be identified specifically by name and agency, or by a more generic description (e.g., “Arterial Traffic Management”).

If listed in the RA, document which inventory elements, market packages, subsystems, and//or information flows are being completed in this project. If there is no information in your RA, arrange with your MPO to provide them this information when your project is designed; they will use it in the next update of the RA.

Please enter your response here:

2. Identification of participating agencies roles and responsibilities:

Instructions: Can you identify all stakeholders that must participate in the implementation phase of this project? What are their roles/responsibilities? Have they committed to the responsibilities? Some of this information might appear in your RA (e.g., “Operational Concepts” or other sections). If this will be defined in later phase of the project (e.g., Concept of Operations), the RA may be a good source to start definition.

Please enter your response here:

3. Procedures and resources necessary for operations and management of the system:

Instructions: Can you identify all stakeholders that must participate in operations, management and maintenance of the system throughout its life cycle? What are the roles, responsibilities, and resources required from each stakeholder? Examples include: money, special equipment, staff time, special expertise, provision of data, and many more. You should consider hardware, software, and communications issues.

Please enter your response here:

4. Requirements definitions:

Instructions: Are the system requirements (functional and performance) already well-defined in writing? If yes, indicate where they can be found (e.g., Std. Specs). If they will be defined in later phase of the project, the applicable high-level functional requirements in the RA may be a good starting point for writing them. The focus is on “what” functions must be performed – not on “how” the technology will be used to perform them.

5. Identification of applicable ITS standards and testing procedures:

Instructions: Do you know yet if any ITS Communications Standards are applicable to this project? If they are applicable, will you use them? If your RA identifies specific Architecture Flows, you can ask your MPO to produce a “Standards Report” for those Flows; it will identify ITS Standards to consider.

Please enter your response here:

6. Analysis of alternative system configurations and technology options to meet requirements:

Instructions: Have you considered alternative designs yet? This could include system configurations, different organizational roles; alternative hardware, software, or communications technology; if you cannot yet make a choice of available alternatives, this analysis will occur in later phase of the project (High-Level Design).

Please enter your response here:

7. Procurement options:

Instructions: Have you considered different procurement options for each of the project phases (design, implementation, operation, and management)? These options could include: off-the-shelf vs. custom, lease vs. buy, fixed-price vs. costreimbursable, etc. Procurement options must consider the level of staff technical expertise, existing agency procurement practices, who will be the project manager, and whether you need a systems engineer and/or system integrator.
