COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
DATE: September 6, 2022
TO: Mayor and Council
FROM: Sara Lillevand, City Administrator
SUBJECT: Overview of City Standards Relating to Pedestrian Ramps and Other Applicable Standards

RECOMMENDATION
This is an informational item only. No action is required.

BACKGROUND
The City of Piedmont Department of Public Works Standard Details encompass design and construction standards for streets, sanitary sewers, storm drains and other miscellaneous items.

They were last revised in 2016 and they are the governing design standards used for all public works improvements within the right-of-way. Sidewalks, curbs, and ADA compliant curb ramps are included as part of the approved Standard Details and the relevant details have been included as an attachment to this staff report for your reference.

In recent years there have been changes to the ADA standards for some pedestrian facilities within the public right-of-way which impact pedestrian ramps and sidewalks in proximity to the ramps. This includes a June 2021 California Building Code update that requires Detectable Warning Surfaces (DWS) to be yellow1. In an effort to bring the City Council up do date on the design standards and recent ADA changes, staff will make a presentation outlining the changes and receive comments from the Council.
