Good busy afternoon, Council and Staff:
Re 1000 Bello, Item 9L on the Consent Agenda today
More information continues to come in. I support your decision to revise the facility to enter/exit on Bello, with emergency traffic lights at the Bello/Wadsworth intersection; however, the new plan provided at the meeting indicated destruction of the old school in its entirety, which I see as a disaster to the history of the site and our city. We should be making plans for the 100th anniversary of the opening of the school, next year, not tearing it down. If you did not give that directive to the consultants, I am happy to hear that. And as a footnote: Please don’t ever have such an important meeting again at a weird time, without good video and sound.
That being said, I respectfully ask that you pull this item from the Consent agenda 1) For clarification, and
2) That your instructions to the consultants for the revision of the layout include a stronger directive regarding the 1923 brick school building, that new plans include
SAVE the 1923 front façade, in place;
AND, the front rooms of the old school, in
place.
Do not dismantle it to reconstruct
something with the materials.
I know all of you, and I know you appreciate Pismo Beach’s unique and very interesting history. I’ll bet you will even put up a plaque on the new facility marking that day in history, for all who come after us to read.
I am attaching here some fascinating old photos that show what we have. …To clarify: the original 1923 building was a T shape, with 2 rooms toward the street at the top of the T. This is the part we should save. Restore it to its original footprint if you can, or at least the front two rooms and entryway, at its current height, with the front steps, and with the Lamp of Knowledge, right where it has been for 99 years.
I am in agreement that the large wings that were attached to the original building may have to sacrificed.
I hope you will agree that the 104 feet of length of the front of the oldest part of the school warrants saving. I am adamantly opposed to dismantling the building brick by brick with the hope of constructing something meaningful to replace the existing original front fascade of the oldest part. I urge you to not dismantle the oldest part, the 104 feet of original frontage.
I will not be speaking today.
I cede my 3 minutes to Henry Myers in hopes he will call in have time to share with you his concept for the layout of the facility, and incorporating the 1923 school front rooms into the plan.
Or to Mark Schmidt if he calls in. These firefighters have great experience to share, and have a deep appreciation for Pismo Beach history.
Henry Myers has an engineering and construction background and knows his stuff. We are fortunate they have taken and interest in this item today.
The product you get from the consultant will be as good as your input to them, and I am optimistic we can do this.
Yours truly,
Effie McDermott
