Honorable Council Members,

Unfortunately, I was unable to call in during yesterday’s council meeting. I hope the consultants were instructed to develop an alternate plan incorporating the existing school facade into the entrance of the new Public Safety Facility, with emergency apparatus entering and exiting from Bello St. This would provide maximum safety for our school children from Judkins Middle School during drop off and pick up hours. I feel it’s vital to take whatever measures necessary to preserve the school facade and it’s historical features. How remarkable would it be to showcase the new Public Safety Facility by framing it with such a classic piece of Pismo’s past. If most of downtown San Luis Obispo can seismically retrofit their historic buildings, it would make sense we could do the same. By combining the old with the new we achieve the best of both worlds.

We can take advantage of advanced design and construction techniques while honoring our past by showcasing this iconic facade as the focal point of our new Public Safety Facility. If I were you, I would be proud to have my name on the building’s plaque, honoring the City leaders who made possible a new state-of-the-art Public Safety Facility with the historical school facade as its centerpiece. Whatever the outcome, it is crucial to remember that the final product is one we will be living with for decades to come…

Sincerely,
Mark Schmitt
