Dear Council Members,
I’m a retired Fire Division Chief from Santa Barbara County Fire Department. As the Support Services Chief, one of my responsibilities was Capital Improvement Projects which included overseeing the design and construction of two fire stations. One of which was a combined Fire/Sheriff Public Safety facility in Lompoc.
I mention this because some have asked for my input on the options that have been presented for the renovation and construction of our own Public Safety Facility at 1000 Bello St. I have submitted my opinion to Council member Reiss regarding options 1 & 2. However, since that time another option has been floated by former Pismo Beach Fire Chief, Henry Myers. I believe Henry’s option bears some thoughtful consideration as it preserves the old schoolhouse facade and incorporates the ramping necessary to satisfy ADA requirements. The previous two options do not accomplish this level of historical preservation. In my opinion it would be a shame to loose such an important piece of Pismo history when it could be incorporated into the new facility design.
For this reason I am asking that your City Council pull this item from the Consent Agenda so that there can be further discussion and public input. It is vitally important to remember that any final decision made on the new Public Safety Facility will be one we will live with for decades to come.
Thank you for your consideration in this important matter
