Dear Mayor Waage and Pismo City Council Members:
I write in support of Options 1 and 2, and in opposition to Options 3, 4, and 5, concerning the Repair/Replacement of the Pier Avenue Stairs - item 12B on your agenda for tonight, November 15, 2022.
The public access to this beach on Ocean Avenue needs to be restored as soon as possible. Only Options 1 and 2 will restore public access to the beach promptly.
The remaining options will require studies, and a delay in obtaining coastal development permits because armoring sea caves, and repairing sea walls, are not favored by the California Coastal Commission. In fact, once beach access is restored using Options 1 or 2, the city can use the enhanced public access addition of stairs at Margo Dodd Park as mitigation for Coastal Commission approval of the sea wall repair.
Unlike the repair of the stairs to restore access on the north part of Ocean Avenue, the Pier Avenue access stairs are the only way down to this beach.
The 5-6 year delay in repairing the second access stairs on north Ocean Avenue did not prevent all beach access, due to the other beach access stairs to that beach. The beach below Pier Avenue does not enjoy other beach access stairs.
Please restore public beach access as soon as possible to the beach below Pier Avenue.
