Administration/Vegetation Management
• Fire staff met with San Luis Obispo County Planning to express concerns over the roundabout construction at Avila Beach Drive and Shell Beach Road. A potential plan is to close the intersection for 40 days during construction. The closure would significantly impact receiving Auto Aid from County Fire, San Luis City Fire and San Luis Ambulance into North Shell Beach. The closure would also impact the City of Pismo Beach providing Auto Aid into Avila and Diablo Canyon Power Plant. Fire is asking for a phased approach to reduce impact.

• Fire Administration staff is working on a CAL FIRE grant-California Climate Investment (CCI) Grant. This grant has the potential to fund needed equipment for vegetation management. Fire staff will work with Public Works for their needs as well as Fire Department needs.

Lifeguards/Junior Lifeguard Program
• The ISA World Para Surf Championship occurred the week of 12/5/22. With most of our Lifeguards back in school and out of the area we augmented staffing with Fire Rescue Swimmers to assist the Lifeguards that were available. The event December 2022 Activity Report

RECREATION PROGRAMS
• Enrollment for winter / spring programs began in December. • Fall adult programs for December; programming for both outdoor and indoor classes include Yoga, Surf, Watercolor, Tae Kwon Do, Qi Gong, Judo and Latin/Ballroom Dance and a Low Impact Fitness class. • Recreation registered 87 participants for recreation programs in December. • Registrations for winter camps are full for art, theater, and volleyball. Recreation is in constant communication with instructors regarding enrollment, set-up and tear-down and additionally checking-in on the programs daily to ensure all is going well.
• Recreation continues to register participants over the phone to answer questions relating to upcoming classes and programs. For our active adults, phone transactions registrations are preferred. • Instructor payments/invoices/weekly cash reconciliation completed as scheduled.

Flyers for upcoming classes and camps were created and translated into spanish, with flyers uploaded onto Peachjar to promote these activities (school district promotional distribution service).

ACTIVITY GUIDE
• The Winter/Spring 2023 activity guide has been delivered to over 21,000 homes in the five cities area. With this dis- tribution, inquires for winter / spring programming have increased with registrations for activities and events con- firmed daily.

SPECIAL EVENTS
• Holiday Harmony December 2nd: This annual event and tree-lighting ceremony featured snow, crafts, cookie deco- rating, bounce houses, and holiday goodie bags from Santa himself. The weather held and attendance was robust with several hundred locals and tourists enjoying a winter wonderland on the pier promenade. • Recreation held Senior Dance on December 12th. This month’s theme was “Happy Holidays” and we had 35 in attendance. Staff provided a meal which included ham, au gratin potatoes, green beans, and dessert. Music was provided by our house band, The Swingin’ Bridge Band.
• Recreation is beginning to prepare for the Black & White Ball and upcoming Father Daughter Dance.

FACILITIES
• The new facility coordinator should begin in January of 2023. Recreation staff is currently filling in by taking in all park/hall reservations and reviewing current rentals on the books.

• Requests for rentals have been steady and rental requests for 2023 are already being reserved. • 6 Park rental applications and 7 hall reservations were booked for the month of December. • The Facility Attendant, Security Guard, and Janitorial service schedule is constantly updated as needed to reflect new rentals.
• Recreation communicated with special events regarding park application, fees, and rental details. Recreation sent the Janitorial service the monthly calendar for programs and cleaning schedule. • Adopt-a-bench inquires continue with currently the only benches along Shell Beach Road Streetscape and pier picnic tables available for adoption. Recreation staff contacted public works and are scheduling a meeting in January 2023 to develop a plan to strategically replace worn benches in need of replacement.
