Significant Incidents
• Week of 1/9/23-The City Type 3 Rescue and City Boat 6 provided Mutual Aid to the County and Firefighters rescued 7 stranded people in San Luis Creek.
Rescue 64 was also dispatched to a drowning woman in front of Sycamore Mineral Springs. Unfortunately, the vehicle she was in quickly filled full of water and by the time City Boat 6 arrived and broke into the car she had was no longer viable. The crew was able to perform the recovery and provide closure to the family. Boat 6 also provided hundreds of pounds of ice and a generator to 200 stranded people near Silver Spur (South of Oceano) at the Pacific Dunes Ranch.
Hats off to the Rescue Responders on Boat 6.
Training
• CAL FIRE Annual Continued Professional Training (CPT) started this month.
There were 5 three-day long classes to move through the material for January 2023 Activity Report

recertification. Topics covered were Medical, Haz Mat, Fire Ground Ops, Rescue Ops and Admin.
Administration/Vegetation Management
• Fire personnel followed the storms closely as the County was pounded by rainfall. The City’s State Certified Type 3 Rescue and fire staff were prepared specifically for River/Flood Rescues and all equipment was ready for response.
Our USAR Team members were available both on and off shift if the need were to arise. The Rescue 64 and Boat 6 were staffed Fri-Sun for 1/13-1/15.
• Fire Administration is working with CAL FIRE on a Wildfire Prevention Grant.
This grant has the potential to fund needed equipment for vegetation management. Fire Administration staff will work with Public Works for their needs as well as the Fire Department. The Pismo Preserve staff have also reached out and we will be assisting them with the grant as well to help reduce risk in the community. This week fire staff sent a letter of endorsement to the Grant Managers for the Land Conservancy Project on the Pismo Preserve. The project will help reduce fuel around the Heights Escape Route and Rattlesnake Canyon.
• It is bittersweet to see some of our Battalion 6 Fire Apparatus Engineers promote. We are happy for their accomplishments but sad to see them go. It is always nice to see them return to the program years later with even more accomplishments since their promotion to Fire Captain. Good luck to them all.
Lifeguards/Junior Lifeguard Program
• The SLO CAL Open Surfing Competition brought many contestants and a World Class Surfing Event to Pismo Beach. Lifeguards staffed the event throughout 5 days the event. One incident occurred with a female surfer when a large wave pushed her board into her face. The resulting impact broke her nose sending her to the ER.
