I am writing this message to express my concern over a public pedestrian right-of-way between Vista Del Mar and Terrace Avenues in Shell Beach. My address is 225 Terrace Ave. and my husband & I built our home in 1978 and witnessed some rather massive changes in our neighborhood over the years. We tried to flex with these changes in the interest of developing a safe and attractive area, even though we didn't always agree with decisions that were supposedly made in our best interest.
Now another decision is being offered to open a public pedestrian right-of-way between Vista Del Mar & Terrace.
My approach to this addresses only safety/security issues and I am hoping that the council has given it the attention that I feel it deserves.
The alley that runs behind our properties is owned by the residents and is used to access the rear of our homes. It intersects with the proposed right- of- way public path. Most people are unaware that it exists but all of that will change if this new path becomes a reality. The loss of privacy & security would be a major concern for most of us who share the alley. It would make it possible to look into and through our homes to determine occupancy at the time and to survey their contents.
Consideration for the children using the path is also something that needs to be examined. The unintended consequences could put children at risk since this would be a less traveled route to and from the school and at a time when there are increasing reports of student bullying, and child predators. Also the alley as well as the driveway that would connect to the right-of-way is used regularly by automobiles that could add another element of danger.
I could go on and on but I realize your time is important. I don't feel that the benefits are worth the risks and I sincerely hope that the council will not vote in favor of this proposal.
Sincerely,
Patricia Tietz
