Training
• The San Luis Obispo County Haz Mat Team took part in training with the California Civil Support Teams and the FBI Long Beach Haz Mat Team. The 2-day training covered rad detection and how to locate radioactive items from long distances. The training was held at the County Fire Drill Grounds at Camp SLO.

Administration/Vegetation Management
• Fire staff was successful in being awarded a $80,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA. This grant will provide funding for handheld radios for Station 64, Station 63, FC Byrnes and BC Lee. This grant is extremally competitive, and the grant process is extensive.

• Fire Administration continues to work with CAL FIRE on a Wildfire Prevention Grant. This grant has the potential to fund needed equipment for vegetation management. Captain Byrnes secured a quote for equipment the City would like to purchase if successful in the CAL FIRE Wildland Fire Prevention Grant.

Michelle Pearson is working on the grant application as it is due by March 15th. If successful, the City would receive approximately $200,000 in grant funding for the vegetation management equipment.

• Week of 2/13-Station 64 personnel took all gas powered 4 cycle engines off the Fire Engines and replaced with battery operated equipment. The lights and fans February 2023 Activity Report

have been replaced with tools that weigh half as much and deploy much faster.

The generators were also removed reducing weight and increasing space on the engines.

• Week of 2/20-Crews funded by the Fire Safe Council conducted some work in Long Canyon behind City Hall. The crews sprayed for French Broom, a plant that is invasive that chokes out most other native species. This is a collaboration with the Fire Safe Council and Local Ranchers. The goal is to keep French Broom out of the Pismo Preserve and the City. The 1000 Hills RX Burn will also help control French Broom.

Lifeguards/Junior Lifeguard Program
• The Ocean Lifeguard recruitment produced 12 applicants, 8 of the applicants rsvp’d for the required swim test (s) and 3 passed the swim test and interview process. Hiring Lifeguards is proving to be difficult Statewide and although the City does their due diligence in advertising, most applicants come by way of word of mouth from our current Lifeguards.

• The Junior Lifeguard Program dates have been set and preparations have been made for swim tests, competitions, and session schedules. We are hoping for another successful year with this new format of two 3-week sessions.
