CONTRACTORS COMPLETE THE ADDITIONS TO PISMO BEACH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PLANT
The new addition to the Pismo Beach Elementary School was completed this week, and on Tuesday the trustees of the district filed notice of completion in compliance with the law which requires formal notice 35 days prior to final payment.
The addition to the school plant, like all public improvements in Pismo Beach, is a credit to the community and will care for the growth of the school for some time to come.
Funds for the school building project were provided in a $30,000 bond issue which was carried practically unanimously. Uevis and Harp of Santa Clara were awarded the contract for construction in October 1931 on a bid of $23,662.00. L. N. Crawford of Santa Maria was the supervising architect. The new addition consists of a wing 114x24.6 feet containing three class rooms with basement, which will be used for cafeteria purpose and storage rooms and an auditorium 51x98 feet.
Construction is of brick and concrete throughout. The auditorium fills a much needed want in the school and is spacious, attractive and excellently equipped. The stage is 24x42 feet in size with two dressing rooms on the north. The curtain is a beautiful reddish maroon shade of velvet velour, the first wing drapes are of jade green velvet matching the drapes on the windows. The other wing drapes are of monk’s cloth, reversible – one side a plain bisque – the other a mottled design in gold, silver and brown on a tan back ground. The stage is equipped with a battery of 15 foot lights and three strings of lights above the wings. The lights are all arranged in a three color scheme. The lantern light fixtures suspended from the beamed ceiling make an exceedingly attractive lighting effect in the auditorium.
The proscenium arch is unusually beautiful in a silver and gold combination. Comfortable folding chairs finished in dark oak have been installed. There is also a combination office and ticket room at the main entrance. Firms and individuals who have participated in the construction, other than the general contractors, are Pomeroy Electric Co., electric wiring, lights; George Mise, plumbing and sheet metal work; Jack McGuire, excavating; Virgil Van Ronk, plastering, all of Pismo Beach; Turcis and Tyler, San Luis Obispo, painting; W. B. Wood, Salinas, brick work.
So far as possible local labor was used. Materials were furnished by the Pacific Coast Lumber Co., and the San Luis Brick Works.
The trustees of the district who have watched over the interests of the district at all stages of construction are: Mrs. Julia M. Howard, clerk; Mrs. Jennie Stewart, and C. P. Harter. Those who are familiar with building costs claim that the district got more than full value for the money expended.
