Significant Incidents
•Week of March 20th-a Structure Fire occurred in a garage near the intersection of Placentia and Shell Breach Road. When the first engine arrived, the garage was fully involved with fire touching the house next door. The fire destroyed the garage, but the house was saved. The house next door did have some fire damage to the siding and in the attic. 5 Fire Engines, 1 Chief Officer and 2 Investigators responded to the incident. Fire staff will work closely with the Planning and Building Department to expedite the residents’ return to the structures.

Training
•Week of March 13th- the City USAR team members recertified their Swift Water skills, the class was held in Templeton in the Salinas River. •Fire staff’s training cycle is into full swing with our annual recertifications for all fire going staff skills. Along with the recertifications, other classes such as Swift March 2023 Activity Report

Water Rescue, Surf Rescue, Rope Tech and other apprentice classes our occurring. With our new Engineers arriving they will find some of their first few months in training.

Administration/Vegetation Management
• Battalion Chief Lee attended a meeting with the City, SLO County Fire, CAL FIRE and Five Cities Fire Authority to amend the Auto Aid Agreement. No changes were made to the City’s part of the plan, some changes were made to Five Cities Fire Authority and SLO County Fire Response Models.

• Grants update-Fire Administration continues to work on submitting and managing multiple grants. The extrication equipment that was funded by the OTS grant has been received and staff is working on placing the equipment into service. Fire staff is working on ordering portable radios that are funded by the Assistance to Firefighters FEMA grant we were awarded in February. The Lifeguard vehicle has been purchased and we are awaiting possession of the truck. The truck was partially funded by the SLO County OHV grant we received in December. Our CAL FIRE Wildland Fire Prevention Grant application has been submitted and we are hoping to get notification for this grant by July 1st. We applied for vegetation management equipment.

• Week of March 20th- all small gas-powered engines were removed from the Fire Fleet and replaced with battery operated tools. This move not only helps with our carbon footprint, but it also reduces weight and deployment time of the new tools.

Lifeguards/Junior Lifeguard Program
• The Junior Lifeguard Program registrations are open on the City website and we have received quite a few. Michelle Pearson worked with City IT staff and Finance staff to make the online registration and payment collection as efficient as possible. Once the kids have passed the swim tests coming up in May, we will process all of the payments and registration will be complete. We are looking forward to our Junior Lifeguard season!
