Administration/Vegetation Management
• Captain Byrnes and Michelle Pearson are geared up for the City Annual Weed Abatement Program. Notices have been sent in City Water Bills and Dennis and Michelle began their first inspections the last week of April. With all the rain Pismo Beach has gotten, we anticipate heavy growth and the need for multiple mowing. As the inspections are conducted, educating our residents on the need for the extra mowing will be top priority.
• The invasive French Broom (FB) removal behind City Hall continues. The canyon behind City Hall on the border of the Pismo Preserve was identified as having FB, this invasive shrub burns quickly and smothers out other native species from growing. It can double or triple the tons per acre of biomass causing large areas April 2023 Activity Report

to have dense buildup of dead material. Herbicide, crew work and burning are continuing in the Canyon to help keep this plant out of Pismo Beach and the Preserve.
• Contract crews continue working on the See Canyon shaded fuel break. This work will help provide control options for a fire coming out of the Irish Hills moving toward Avila and Shell Beach. It will also provide a much safer travel route for Fire Engines and residents who try to leave the area. This is a $200,000 Grant provided by the Fire Safe Council.
• Fire Department worked with County Parks to mow Cave Landing and Ontario Ridge. This work will help keep fires contained to the Cove area and reduce fire risk around the Critical Communication’s Site on the hilltop and the homes on Bluffs Dr & El Portal.
Lifeguards/Junior Lifeguard Program
• Our Pismo Beach USLA Certified Class began for our 3 new Rookie Lifeguards.
The Academy is 3 consecutive weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun) with an additional 2 weeks of Shadow Lifeguarding. This is the only Fire Department run USLA Class on the Central Coast and it adds additional medical and rescue modules that other programs do not have.
