Section VII.2. Parasites & Feces
"When it comes to the design of a dog park,it is
important to consider some serious health
issues to humans & dogs. Soil can be quickly
contaminated if dog droppings are not
immediately picked up."
Of largest concern are the parasites considered
zoonotic or transmittable to humans:
roundworms and hookworms
Roundworms (UPenn Study Contd)
"The most common intestinal parasite in dogs is
the roundworm. The eggs develop into larvae
and are found in the infected dog's feces. The
parasite can spread to other dogs by ingesting
soil or drinking water and licking paws and fur
that is contaminated. A female dog can pass the
infection on to her unborn puppies. Serious
respiratory problems such as pneumonia can
then result (American Veterinary Medical
Association, 2006).)1
"Roundworms are zoonotic, which means that the
disease may be passed to humans. Humans are at
most risk when they have direct contact with an
infected dog because the larvae can enter through
the skin and also may be accidentally ingested.
Children can get roundworm by playing in sand
or soil that is contaminated (emphasis added) If
the roundworm is not treated in a human, the larvae
can find its way into the organs and tissues causing
damage to the lungs, brain, and liver. Partial or even
permanent blindness can occur if the larva enters
the eyes (American Veterinary Medical Association,
2006). Eggs can survive for ten years or more in the
soil. The eggs are sticky and can be easily
transported by flies, birds, clothing, and shoes."

Q
0 So How Much Poop is in a Park? (Calgary Study, 2023)
The City of Calgary sought to measure the amount
poop in their parks, "Researchers have calculated how
much poop is left behind in Calgary Parks - it's a lot." (CBC, 3/20/23)
They found that there were 169 poops/Hectare over
six months
1 Hectare = 0.714 football fields = roughly the size of Spyglass Park
Nearly one poop/day leftover in Spyglass Park
Figure double the dog traffic w/ proposed dog park—>
127 additional grams of poop/week/Hectare
127 x 52 = 6,604 additional grams of poop/year = 14.5
pounds of poo
"Coming across poop in a park isn't just gross, it
could also have health implications for you and
your dog. Researchers have been studying a
tapeworm that can infect people, coyotes, foxes,
and dogs. In some cases, the tapeworm, can
cause a tumour -like disease in humans. The
tapeworm lays its eggs in animals' intestinal
tracts, so when a dog or animal poops in a park
it can find the ideal host — that's typically a
mouse. Finally, to complete the cycle, a dog will
find and eat an infected mouse and bring that
tapeworm home."
So How Much Raw Untreated Sewage is in Sewers?
The Surfrider foundation asked this very question: "The Blue Water Task Force is now sampling at St.
Ann's Sewers!"
"Collecting water quality data at this site has been a goal of our BWTF. The break at this popular surf spot in Shell Beach is at the outlet for a major storm drain, so there is a lot of potential for people in the water to be exposed to contaminated surface runoff. Water quality testing results from St. Anns/Sewers will be posted."
Given that there are 14.5 pounds of additional poop in the park per year, some of this poop will make it to the ocean thru the nearby storm drain, not to mention the additional unleashed dog traffic at the beach Hence, before and after seawater water quality will be determined by the SurfRider Foundation My prediction is that the sewage will double, let's avoid this upcoming hassle: "No Sewage in Sewers"
Planning Commission Appeal Concerns
The City Manager filed the appeal on May 4, not addressing any of the 9 points laid out by the Planning Commission... but
Given that the applicant for the appeal recently resigned from his post and is not a resident, he can no longer represent the City of Pismo Beach
Section IV: Indemnification Agreement For Planning Commission Development Application:
Item 5: "Applicant's defense and indemnification of City and/or City Officials set forth herein shall remain in full force and effect throughout all stages of litigation, including any and all appeals..."
Given that the applicant no longer remains in full force and effect throughout the appeals process, his appeal application is considered null and void.
r_J
Appeal: Null & Void
Given that ten business days have passed since the 4-1 decision by the Planning Commission rejecting the dog park, the time for appeal has passed Hence, there is no appeal to be considered, as its time has come and gone Let it be known that the Dog Park Appeal is considered null and void due to violation of Article Iv.5 of the Planning Commission Application No Dog Park at Spyglass Park... its appeal applicant has left the building
Potential Solution & Future Directions
Relocation to Chumash Park: 23 Acres vs. 4.5 Acres:
Suggested by Planning Commission Vice -Chair
Spyglass Park is a jewel of our city (read the Yelp Reviews), but can be improved::
1. Building a gazebo for weddings & sunset viewing
2. Plaques on the 3 Surf Spots & their history: St. Ann's, Sewers, & the Box
3. A safer path to the ocean from Spyglass Park
4. Increased Parking, like in the old days drive to the bluff (1979 video)
5. Hazardous plant removal & anti -erosion planting
6. Establishing a Community Natural Wildlife Habitat, secure grant funding
7. Decreasing nighttime use, because nothing good happens in the park at night
