PISMO BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT
Agenda Item #12.A
Meeting Date: February 20, 2024
TITLE:
US 101 Five Cities Multimodal Project Concept Designs
RECOMMENDATION:
Receive an update on the US 101 Five Cities Multimodal Project and provide input.
DISCUSSION:
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) have been working together since 2014 to find a solution to the congestion on US 101, specifically on the southbound lanes during peak travel times.
Due to right-of-way and topographical restrictions, the addition of a third travel lane has proven to be impractical and financially unrealistic. However, the design team has come up with the concept of a “managed shoulder” or “part-time travel lane” to increase the capacity of the freeway during peak hours.
Caltrans and SLOCOG staff presented initial design concepts to the City Council on December 5, 2023 that included the medians on US 101, and the Council asked that the project team return with visual simulations of the retaining wall along Price Street.
Caltrans and SLOCOG staff will be providing a presentation on the project concept designs to allow the City to stay informed of the project and to provide input. Some of the visual simulations from the presentation have been included as Attachment 1.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Council provide feedback on the project concept designs.
