A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PISMO BEACH, CALIFORNIA RECOGNIZING JANUARY 2025 AS NATIONAL MENTORSHIP MONTH WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County's mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships to ignite the power and promise of youth; and WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County has provided 30 years of life- changing mentoring programs that promote education, healthy relationships, positive self- esteem and life-long growth; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters' volunteer mentors have improved the lives of more than 4,000 local children since opening in 1995; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters' mentoring programs are an evidence-based, prevention program with statistically significant effectiveness at reducing drug use and violence, and improving youth mental health and academic performance; and WHEREAS, 98 percent of children in Big Brothers Big Sisters' program graduate from high school and 75 percent continue their post high school education; and WHEREAS, volunteer mentors and professional staff support family wellness and ensure that child safety standards are met; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County's volunteers invested over 19,200 hours of volunteer time in 2024, which is valued at $643,008 by The Independent Sector; and
WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County has been honored with numerous awards by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, including the prestigious 2023 Growth Award; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pismo Beach formally recognizes the month of January as National Mentoring Month and embraces the vision that all children should achieve their full potential.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Pismo Beach hereby recognizes Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County, on their 30th Anniversary year, for the quality youth mentoring programs that they provide for the children and families in San Luis Obispo County.
