To our Pismo Beach City Council.

I am writing to express my hope that the city saves this iconic structure. I live near the estate in Shell Beach and often walk past when I am out and about and can tell you there is something about this place that is really special. I see many people who appear to be vacation renters or other visitors who stop at its gates and just stare at the grounds and manor and It makes me proud that we have such a place that is owned by our town and not a private owner, corporation or LLC. People can sense that they are not only welcomed to admire but encouraged with the open landscape and unobstructed fencing. They spend many minutes there and ponder. At any other seaside mansion they'd be wondering what exists beyond a tall tailored wall of ficus or if there was a way the rottweilers can get out.

But like the Pier, Price Historical Park, or the Pismo Preserve, the Chapman House doesn't bring enough revenue to offset the expenses. I understand this was in part due to constraints that made it hard to garner it's full potential. Despite the setbacks, I've witness countless hours spent by volunteers tending to it's grounds and think that if the estate is released, it should go to those that have been showing their commitment to preserving and showcasing it's value; the Chapman Estate Foundation. As a 501(c) (3) non profit, it will continue to be used in a way that local residents are already accustomed, and a lesson for future generations of the importance of giving back to your community, and of taking care of generous gifts that have been given no matter how big or how small.

Sincerely,
Larry Silvas
