Pismo Beach City Council and Staff:
I am a citizen of Pismo Beach, raised in Grover Beach and Pismo Beach and a recent returning resident. My family had recently lived in Arroyo Grande for more than 20 years. My parents built in Pismo Beach in Pacific Estates in 1986. My mother began and owned a thriving business that I joined her in, and now run at Keller Williams Realty Central Coast -- the Pismo Beach Homes Team. I am also a commissioner on the Housing Authority of SLO County, as well as a passionate community volunteer and organizer for many organizations.
Our California housing crisis is universal -- it is not solely focused on one segment of the market. In fact, many economic studies have shown that we simply need more of ALL sectors of the housing market. Opening up more housing units in every sector frees up housing in other sectors. While the lowest on the scale deserve significant attention, all of the levels of housing must continue to make gains in order to serve our growing population.
Furthermore, the existing abandoned gas station and sad welcome sign are not the inviting welcome that we as a City should be presenting to our hundreds of thousands of visitors who may one day want to call Pismo Beach home.
In my industry I have been disheartened to hear from many of our local developers that Pismo Beach has become a hostile building environment. It is difficult to move through the process even with a carefully curated plan. It is expensive and time consuming and filled with obstacles and roadblocks.
The Gateway project in Pismo has been thoughtfully crafted with attention to the usual Pismo Beach concerns -- parking is on-site. Architectural style has been designed with the art deco elements of Pismo Beach. Retail/restaurant options included to provide our visitors and residents with more options -- and I believe this will only benefit the businesses at the North end of downtown that might not see the attention and shopping/visiting traffic that the more central downtown businesses do.
I support this project and hope the Council will as well. We need our council to be part of the Housing Solution in California, not a roadblock to growth.
Thank you for your consideration,
Ashlea
