To the Honorable Mayor and Members of the Pismo Beach City Council:
My name is Brian Talley, and I am here with my mother representing the Marianne Talley Foundation, one of the named beneficiaries of the Chapman Estate Trust.
The Marianne Talley Foundation was established in 1993 in memory of my sister, Marianne Talley, following her sudden passing. The Foundation's mission has focused on providing scholarships to Arroyo Grande High School students, and I am proud to share that over the past 32 years we have awarded $481,000 to 78 deserving scholars.
We were both surprised and honored that Clifford Chapman and Gene Shidler chose to include the Marianne Talley Foundation as a beneficiary of their trust. We believe our work carries forward the remarkable legacy of philanthropy these two gentlemen established during their lifetimes in San Luis Obispo County.
As you consider next steps, we respectfully ask that any decision you make not diminish the value of the Chapman Estate. Having managed the property for manyyears, the City of Pismo Beach has a practical understanding of the financial resources required to properly operate and maintain this historic asset. Like the other beneficiaries, we prefer that the property be sold rather than operated by an entity without the resources to maintain it adequately, which could lead to deterioration of the property and adverse impacts on neighboring residents.
In closing, the Marianne Talley Foundation supports the sale of the property. We believe this approach is most consistent with the wishes of Clifford Chapman and Gene Shidler and is in the best interest of the neighborhood and the broader community.
