Unfortunately I am unable to attend tonight’s city council meeting. However I wanted to take the opportunity to send some concerns and solutions regarding thresher shark fishing at the Pismo beach pier. Thresher shark fishing is nothing new and as an avid surfer and fishermen I support fishing our local waters. However I do believe there is a better process that can be put in place to address the current issue of hanging sharks in the water bleeding in the nearshore waters where children surfers and visitors frequent. You may or may not be aware that a shark bite occurred in our local waters recently resulting in superficial injuries thankfully and. O one was seriously injured.

But hanging sharks that are active bleeding does pose a threat to the public myself and my children specifically who surf near the Pismo pier daily. Understanding there is no current ordinance preventing the fishing for sharks I do think there is a solution that all parties will be excited about. It does come at a cost to the city but others already have this practice in place. Stronger enforcement and f no overhead casting. Currently those fishing for thresher sharks are overhead casting. The sharks aren’t the only threat posed but hooking innocent standards and onlookers men women and children. I’m not aware of any incidents to date but there is a public threat with the overhead casting. Next improving wash stations. Providing a wash station that contains blood and other remains to reduce the elements of attraction for other predators such as great white sharks. Requiring fishermen to be in possession and bring coolers to store the meat if the fish they catch to keep it cool and salvageable or provide cooling lockers to the public or allow private business to provide them at a cost to the fishermen and women. Tension is high between surfers and fishermen. And this contentious feeling is mutual and mutually wants to be mitigated. These are some simple solutions that could improve our economy and bring more commerce to our community while keeping everyone as safe as possible and allowing everyone to enjoy our beautiful beaches of the central coast.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
