Dear City Council,
Please place my below email into the record for the Tuesday, September 15 City Council meeting.
I am a regular surfer at Pismo Beach (2-4 times a week) for the past 10 plus years. I understand there needs to be a coexistence between surfers and fisherman near the pier but the City needs to do a better job of protecting the safety of those in the water from some of the practices and behavior of the fisherman.
It was brought to my attention recently by other local surfers that certain fisherman were fishing for thresher sharks and tossing their remains back into the ocean near the pier. This was more or less creating chum to attract larger great white sharks that have been known to be in the waters in and around Pismo and thus creating an unsafe environment for any swimmer in the water.
I respectfully ask the City to review this issue and take appropriate action to ensure that the handling of caught sharks does not create unnecessary risk to the public.
