DISCUSSION
Background
In the United States, the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as “Gay Pride Day,” but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the day grew to encompass a monthlong series of events. In recent years, celebrations in the month of June have included pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts. LGBTQ+ Pride Month events have attracted millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.
On June 5, 2017, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 45-17 (attached) declaring the City of Pleasant Hill’s commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive, tolerant and safe community for everyone. The City Council has since adopted resolutions each year recognizing the month of June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Plus (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in the City of Pleasant Hill, and directed staff to fly a Rainbow Flag at City Hall throughout the month of June. The request from Councilmember Ken Carlson is for Council to adopt a similar resolution declaring the month of June (2022) as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Plus (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in the City and directing staff to fly a Rainbow Flag throughout the month of June.
