POINT ARENA CITY COUNCIL
AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY
AGENDA ITEM: VIII B
MEETING DATE: 2/25/2024
TITLE
City Attorney Contract First Amendment
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Approve the First Amendment of the Contract for City Attorney Services with JonesMayer
ANALYSIS
On March 26, 2024, the Point Arena City Council approved a contract with Jones-Mayer, a public agency law firm focused solely on representing public entities throughout California. Baron Bettenhausen, a Partner with Jones-Mayer, currently serves as the Point Arena City Attorney.
The current contract stipulates at the rate of $225.00 per hour for attorney representation and $115.00 per hour for a paralegal. Jones-Mayer now requests to increase the rate to $250.00 per hour for attorney representation and $125.00 per hour for a paralegal. Compared to other public law firms that often charge up to $500/hour, this proposed rate is very reasonable. From July 1 - December 31, 2024, Jones-Mayer averaged $2,500 per month for legal services, which is again very reasonable.
FISCAL IMPACT
Increase of 11% over previous Jones-Mayer City Attorney rates.
