TITLE
Trash & Recycling Cans Replacement Project
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Receive report and direct staff.
ANALYSIS
In 2021, the City received a State Parks grant to upgrade and install new park equipment.
To date, the City has installed a swing set at the Downtown Park and provided new benches and rehabilitated picnic tables at both the Downtown Park and Arena Cove.
Grant funds may also be used for the purchase of new garbage and recycling cans. Staff recommends that trash cans be uniform throughout the City, including at the Pier, Downtown Park, and along Main Street. The City currently has 12 sets of cans (see attached document).
The proposed trash can represents the style reviewed by staff. Cans must be sturdy and heavy enough to withstand Point Arena winters, with the current 32-gallon size maintained. Staff requests side-load containers to limit accessibility and reduce unauthorized household trash disposal.
This model offers a competitive price, with the unit cost decreasing to $609 through bulk ordering. It also provides limited access for trash disposal, consistent with staff objectives.
Staff suggest a blue can for recycling and a brown can for landfill waste.
FISCAL IMPACT
$609 per can plus tax & shipping, reimbursable by Prop 68 Parks Grant.
