DISCUSSION:
Designed by Welton Beckett & Associates and constructed in 1969, the Council Chamber has adequately served its purpose of providing a space for the City Council to conduct City business in an open setting for the general public. It also serves as a meeting space for various City Commission and Committee meetings, and for large staff meetings. Sometime after its original construction, the Chamber was renovated to provide ADA accessibility, among other related improvements.
In an effort to extend the useful life and purpose of the Council Chamber, the proposed project is intended to enhance both the onsite and remote public experience, production quality, security and language accessibility within the Chamber, while also preparing the facility for local emergency declarations with proper staging configuration to facilitate ease of media coverage. This will incorporate miscellaneous facility, IT infrastructure, and audio/visual (A/V) improvements, including installation of new appliances for dual language audio and captioning support, upgrading of dais hardware, relocating of the speaker’s podium and Staff tables, upgrading/reconfiguration of audience seating, carpeting, and the overall improvement of electrical, lighting, and A/V utilities for optimal program broadcasting.
The bulk of this work will be scheduled to occur in June/July of 2023, during a time when there are only two scheduled Council meetings in a 7-week period. Some associated work may occur prior to this window of work with minimal to no impact to the typical Chamber business.
COUNCIL PRIORITIES & GOALS:
This item supports Priority 4 Safe and Clean Community: Invest in public safety, community programming, and maintenance of properties and infrastructure to ensure residents, businesses, visitors, and employees feel safe, neighborhoods reflect the beauty of Pomona, and the community feels a sense of pride and ownership of the City.
