Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I am Jerry De Vries from Day One, and I am writing to provide you with an update on our substance abuse prevention efforts in Pomona. As you may know, Day One has a history of leading public health initiatives, and we are proud to announce our newest campaign, Let's Make a Difference, which is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control Department.

As part of our community engagement work at Day One, we are reaching out to local pharmacies to promote the Let's Make a Difference campaign, a community-level prevention initiative aimed at reducing opioid and prescription drug misuse and abuse in the United States. Overdose deaths involving prescription opioids have more than quadrupled since 1999, and an estimated 2.1 million people across the United States struggle with an opioid use disorder. The Let's Make a Difference campaign promotes the 3 Core Safe Medication Practices, including Safe Storage, Not Sharing, and Safe Disposal, to reduce accessibility and availability that contribute to prescription drug abuse.

We understand that pharmacies play a critical role in promoting safe medication practices and reducing opioid and prescription drug misuse and abuse. By institutionalizing Safe Medication Practices and providing year- round disposal options, pharmacies can help prevent these substances from falling into the wrong hands and contributing to the opioid epidemic. The Let's Make a Difference initiative has four main components to address opioid and prescription drug misuse and abuse. First, print and multimedia materials will be used to raise awareness of the dangers of these drugs and promote safe medication practices. Second, the pharmacy engagement component will work with independent and larger pharmacies to provide year-round disposal options and institutionalize safe medication practices. Third, strategic partners such as parent centers and community-based organizations can distribute materials and pledge cards to promote the campaign. Finally, additional disposal sites for prescription drugs and sharps will be established to reduce availability for misuse and minimize negative impacts on the environment. Proper drug disposal has been strongly supported by the US Food and Drug Administration for many years. By engaging with local pharmacies, we can work towards reducing opioid and prescription drug misuse and abuse in our community.

During the month, we will be visiting local pharmacies to explain how they can be incorporated into our Let's Make a Difference campaign and become active members. We have identified five independent businesses that may be interested in having educational materials at their locations, as well as year-round safe disposal drop boxes. We hope to provide another update next month after making connections with these businesses.

In addition, we are excited to announce that we will be participating in a Youth Symposium at Western University on April 29th, where we will be engaging with local passionate youth interested in being leaders in health and wellness. We will also be surveying and asking community members to sign pledges called "Safe Home" pledges that ask them to not share medications, dispose of them safely, and store them safely in their homes.

Thank you for taking the time to read our update on this critical issue. We look forward to working with the Council to highlight those involved in our community prevention efforts in the future. --

CAUTION: This email originated from outside your organization. Exercise caution when opening attachments or on clicking links from unknown senders.

Dear Pomona City Council,
My name is Raam Ravi and I have been a longtime member and canvasser for PUSH-Pomona United for Stable Housing.

I am writing in response to the agenda item regarding housing for the city of Pomona.

As of April 1st, protections for renters/tenants have expired. It would be greatly appreciated if you could renew these crucial protections.

We cannot afford to let the processes of gentrification, homelessness, and rising housing costs discourage renters/tenants, who are getting displaced from the city of Pomona due to the housing crisis.

Kind Regards,
