Dear Councilmembers,
The mission of Claremont After-School Programs, Inc. (CLASP) is to help elementary-school children enhance their academic, organizational and social skills by providing high-quality, after-school programs in Claremont Unified School District neighborhoods. The boundaries of CUSD overlap with part of Pomona's District 6, which includes affordable housing complexes, extended-stay hotels, and mobile home parks that are north and south of Foothill Boulevard and west of Towne Avenue. About 37% of our students live in this area.
As of January 20 we had 23 Pomona students. Our actual program cost last year was $1,577 per student, which translates to a cost of $36,271 for the 23 Pomona students that we serve. The requested $6,750 only covers the cost of 4.3 students.
CLASP offers in-person and Zoom sessions, providing after-school homework assistance and enrichment two days per week for 90 minutes each day. Children are admitted to CLASP because they have been identified by their teachers as students who have the greatest need of our services. Volunteer tutors work with one student at a time to help reduce the achievement gap that has widened for academically at-risk students due to COVID-19.
This early intervention helps students gain the knowledge and skills they need to do well in the classroom.
I would like to share some of the testimonials we have received.
From CLASP parent, Saul Valencia:
Thanks to the tutoring program, my daughters have developed more verbally and in writing at school. I thank you for that. Before, they were girls who expected little, but the tutoring has helped them to show up more. Thank you in advance, we hope they continue to help more for many years. children since they are the future unfortunately we could not study in our country what we want for them is that they continue studying and thanks to tutoring they develop more in literature and writing verbally and communication are better Thank you
From CLASP Parent, Vanessa Rodriguez:
Being a single parent doesn't give me enough time to review all her school assignments. My daughter has improved her reading and math skills through CLASP. She was able to catch up; distant learning during the pandemic was very hard and she was not at the level she needed to be.
From the Principal of Sumner Danbury Elementary School, Rahkiah Brown (Note: There are 22 students from Sumner in the CLASP program; 14 of them live in Pomona.) The CLASP program has been a key component to the success of closing educational gaps from the effects school closures due to Covid 19. Through the small group support, detail-orientated instruction, and professionalism of the CLASP program, our 14 Pomona students have made academic gains on district benchmarks in both ELA and math. Parents and students have also been pleased with our 1 students' progress through the support of in-person, off-site, and online tutoring. It has been amazing watching our Pomona students' self-confidence grow from the benefits of the CLASP program.
From a tutor at Sumner School in response to the question, what difference do you think CLASP makes in the lives of our students?
A sense of direction. CLASP gives them finally that sense of direction. I think many of these kids don't have many one-on-one interactions with their teachers. Perhaps they feel like they're on their own when it comes to doing their own homework. CLASP is a place for them to come and grow familiar with a tutor or two and the work that their fellow classmates are doing with their tutor. They learn practical real-life practices for how to get things done, whether it's homework or tasks at home--whether it's cleaning your room or being organized and having a plan for your day-making sure you save your free time for later and handle all your business first. You're teaching these kids the proper practices to go about their day- to-day life. It might start with homework because that's the best way that we can help them here and now.
CLASP really helps grow the relationship between students and teachers, and students and mentors.
CLASP helps kids with a sense of direction and the focus to see something bigger--something that they would want for themselves or from their tutors.
Thank you for your continued support of CLASP and the Pomona children that we serve.
Sincerely,
Cindy Sullivan
CLASP Treasurer
