EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
This action will provide Community Services the financial support to administer Compassion 101: (Re)Connecting To Our Humanity, a project aimed at creating a more compassionate community by centering on practices and principles to improve acceptance, value differences, examine common beliefs, inspire action, and create future leaders who respond with compassion and courage. Approval of Resolution 2023-104 will authorize an increase in revenue estimates and appropriation (amendment of the FY 2023-24 Operating Budget) of the $8,654 grant funds.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Adoption of Resolution 2023-104 (Attachment 1) will amend the FY 2023-24 Operating Budget by increasing revenue estimates and appropriating $8,654 in grant funds (Fund 215-4190-40889/5xxxx-58780) from Tri-City Mental Health Services to administer Compassion 101: (Re)Connecting To Our Humanity. There is no grant match.
DISCUSSION:
Tri-City Mental Health Services (TCMHS) is the public mental health authority and primary provider of mental health outpatient services for the residents of Claremont, La Verne and Pomona. Through its Prevention and Early Intervention Plan, the Community Wellbeing Grant Program funds projects up to $10,000, to organizations that improve the wellbeing of its community members, for up to three (3) years. Staff researched the grant guidelines and determined that the project, Compassion 101: (Re)Connecting To Our Humanity aligned with the funding opportunity and submitted a proposal on April 2, 2023.
On May 18, 2023, Community Services staff received award notification for Compassion 101: (Re)Connecting To Our Humanity, a project aimed at creating a more compassionate community by centering on practices and principles to improve acceptance, value differences, examine common beliefs, inspire action, and create future leaders who respond with compassion. The Project will serve 250 youth, ages 7-17, through providing the opportunity to participate in monthly workshops that will focus on age-appropriate topics and discussions on race, culture, religion, tolerance, empathy, acceptance, and compassion. Teens will have the opportunity to engage in an intensive one-day workshop accompanied with a field trip to a Holocaust museum. Lastly, project participants will have the opportunity to design, plan, and administer a citywide culminating teen event, a Human Library. A Human Library uses the library analogy of lending people rather than books to challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. Attendees will be allowed to “check out” people that they would not normally have access to for 30-minute sessions. The Project is scheduled to begin August 2023 through May 2024. The grant period is July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.
Community Services is committed to providing high quality, meaningful recreational programming that fosters wellness and strengthens the capacity of the community to increase social connection and mental wellbeing.
