Dear Mayor Sandoval and Members of the City Council,
I write this letter to register my support for the proposed grant of $158,000 from the City of Pomona to CHERP Inc (CHERP). Doing so will help leverage funds that CHERP has already secured, providing access to an additional $600,000 investment through LENDonate, a unique lending platform specifically for nonprofits. CHERP will use these funds to move toward hiring, which will advantage work on the Pomona Jobs Program (JP) project and the transformational anchor institution collaborative toward which the PJP is the first step. It will also use them to finance critical working capital which is needed during the microfactory's startup.

I strongly believe in the positive impact that CHERP will create in Pomona as well as LA County through its unique solar technology and nonprofit business model.

I was initially a skeptic of the claims that CHERP was making about ideal's solar technology.

After working on a HMC clinic project for four years, which was designed to test and validate the technology, I became one of its strongest supporters. Based on our testing, I co-wrote an IEEE Journal of Photovoltaics article (IEEE J. Photo Volt, vol. 12, no. 4, July 2022) which explains the BrilliantV module's ability to prevent hot spots from occurring.

A member of The Claremont Colleges
I also co-led CHERP's Pando Days Project "L.A. Factories for the Future. " Students from HMC, Pomona College, and Cal Poly Pomona worked with CHERP to create a GIS map that identifies the areas in LA County that could benefit most from the CHERP model. They also began initial conversations with four potential locations in L.A. County for additional nonprofit solar microfactories. This project won the award for "feasibility and viability" at the Pando Days Finale in April 2023.

I strongly encourage you to support CHERP by voting to approve the $158,000 grant proposal.

Sincerely,

Grid Alternatives builds community powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy. We worked recently with CHERP on the Transformational Climate Communities (TCC) planning grant and are excited to use CHERP modules for our projects included in the TCC implementation grant. These projects are designed to provide solar energy and lower energy bills for Pomona residents.

We are also excited to work with CHERP and other stakeholders in LA County to create a multi- disciplinary training program that prepares participants, including women, BIPOC and justice impacted individuals, for a variety of positions within the green sector and beyond. We believe this is critical for the County to meet its current and future workforce demands for trained/skilled workers.
