SUBJECT: APPROVE THE APPOINTMENT OF FIVE (5) POLICE OVERSIGHT COMMISSIONERS PURSUANT TO NEW SECTION 806 OF THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF POMONA RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council approve the appointment of the five (5) new commissioners of the Police Oversight Commission pursuant to new Section 806 of the City Charter.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
At the August 7, 2023 City Council Meeting, the Council adopted Ordinance No. 4333 which established a new Police Oversight Commission by amending Division 6 of Article 5 of Chapter 2 of the Pomona City Code to implement new Section 806 of the City Charter. Section 2-652(a) of Ordinance No. 4333 states notwithstanding “Section 801 of this Charter, the Commission shall be comprised of five (5) members appointed by majority vote of the City Council.” FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with this action.
DISCUSSION:
Applications for the Police Oversight Commission were accepted in the City Clerk’s office from August 8-September 6, 2023. Applications were then reviewed by a subcommittee of the City Council that selected five applicants (Attachment No’s. 1-5) to bring to the City Council for final approval. If approved, applicants will be sworn in as commissioners. The first meeting of the Commission is tentatively scheduled for November 14, 2023.
