PREVIOUS RELATED ACTION:
On December 6, 2021, the City Council accepted $40,000 in State CLG program funds to complete the Citywide Historic Context Statement. This document has been used as a foundation for this grant, as well as evaluating properties for historic significance.
DISCUSSION:
After completion of the City’s Citywide Historic Context Statement, it was determined that there were several areas of the City’s history that needed further research. One of those areas was Pomona’s Latina/Latino community with a focus on South Pomona. A historic context statement on Latina/os will serve as a vital tool for preserving and celebrating the rich cultural, social, and political contributions of the Latina/o community throughout history. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the historical experiences, struggles, and achievements of Latina/os, such a statement not only acknowledges their significance but also ensures that their stories are integrated into the broader narrative of the city’s past. This inclusion helps promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a more complete and accurate portrayal of our collective history, which is essential for building a more inclusive and equitable society for the future. The goal is to continue with multiple context statements to capture all of the diverse communities that make up the rich fabric of the Pomona community.
In order to further develop this research and history The City applied for the maximum available funding of $40,000 to develop a Latina/o Historic Context Statement. This historic context statement will provide the city with the history of the Latina/o community in Pomona and how South Pomona developed, identifying major themes and property types that may be historic. This foundational document will provide the basis for future historic resource survey, and well as a basis for historic designations and housing’s Section 106 reviews. On August 18, 2023, the California Office of Historic Preservation announced that Pomona was awarded a $40,000.00 Certified Local Government (CLG) Program Grant. Under the work plan submitted for this grant, the City of Pomona will hire a consultant to prepare the historic context statement and provide training for the Commission and Staff.
