20 CIVIC CENTER PLAZA - NEW PLAYGROUND CONCEPT PLAN "A"

CONCEPT LAYOUT STATEMENT
When conceptualizing the design for this park layout,
creating elevation was key. Elevation, whether from tall play features or changes in topography, were a common element and focal point in all destination play areas HAI researched.

This grassy expanse already has some changes in
elevation- about 4' of elevation gain from the corner nearest West 7th Street and the Courthouse up to the northeast
corner nearest the Library.

In this concept, we exaggerated the elevation change by dropping the interior of the lawn and keeping the planter areas with large trees at their existing levels with the use of low retaining walls, stepped terraces, and slope play. The terraced area has been designed to be ADA accessible
mid-terrace and can be used for seating or picnicing.

Creating a "bowl" effect in this concept also provides some protection within the play area. Guardrail is shown placed along the retaining walls to keep both the children within the play area and protect the planter areas from foot traffic.

Maintaining the naturally higher elevation along the
northeastern edge of the park provides the opportunity for a ramping system up to a large play tower or element that allows A.D.A. access into a higher level, approximately 9' higher than the lowered play area flooring.

Access into the play area is from the sidewalk along West 7th Street, a ramp from the upper plaza to the tot lot, and ramp access from the restroom facility. Here, we show a conceptual layout for the following features:
• Sand and Water Play
• Tot Lot (2-5 Year Play Area)
• 5-12 Year Play Area
• Tiered Seating Integrated with Slope Play
• Fog and Cube Climber Play
• Entry Plaza
• Picnic Seating with Shade Shelter
• Restroom Facility, including Family Restrooms
• Maintenance Building for Fountain, Water Play and Fog Equipment
• 3 Points of Access into the Park
