PREVIOUS RELATED ACTION:
On May 15, 2023, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 2023-78 creating the Project and appropriating $14,000 of ARP funding to the Project.
DISCUSSION:
This Project provides for the construction of public safety improvements within District 2. These improvements include installing crosswalks on all four approaches at the intersection of Commercial Street and Park Avenue, installing a new streetlight concrete standard with luminaire at the southwest corner of Fremont Street and Catalina Drive, and installing a utility light on an existing utility pole along the south side of Fremont Street (just west of Catalina Drive). A portion of the funds have already been expended for the installation of the new street light at the corner of Fremont Street and Catalina Drive, and the remaining scope of the Project will be fulfilled with the appropriation of the additional $10,000 of ARP funds.
The Project is located in a Qualified Census Tract, and pedestrian safety features like crosswalks and streetlights can promote improved health and safety outcomes as the Project increases access to healthy foods and parks. These proposed improvements are in response to the pre-existing disparities that contributed to the COVID disproportionate impacts on low-income communities.
COUNCIL PRIORITIES & GOALS:
This item supports the 2021-22 City Council Priority 5: Infrastructure: Invest resources in streets, sidewalks, parks, landscaping, water systems, and public facilities to enhance the economic development, public safety, accessibility, and beauty of the City.
