A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA, COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMING JUNE 2024 AS “LGBTQIA+ PRIDE MONTH” IN THE CITY OF POMONA WHEREAS, our nation was founded on the principles of equal rights for all people, the fulfillment of this promise has been long in coming for many Americans. Some of the most inspiring moments in our history have arisen from the various civil rights movements that have brought one group after another much more – but not always enough – recognition and justice in American society; and WHEREAS, Pride is a celebration of our history and progress, it is also a crucial movement against unjust systems of oppression ; and WHEREAS, our nation has come far in social and legal actions to protect LGBTQIA+ communities, violence perpetrated against these communities continues, ending violence and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ communities requires our continued focus and diligence beyond Pride Month, and it is important that we stand and fight alongside with LGBTQIA+ persons who are affected by this daily; and WHEREAS, every June we commemorate the beginning of the Stonewall Uprising with LGBTQIA+ pride celebrations that take place around the country, our celebration and fight should be occurring year-round, not just in the month of June; and WHEREAS, Pomona has diverse LGBTQIA+ communities that include people of all race/ethnicities, religions, social classes, and professions, the city of Pomona also supports its LGBTQIA+ residents by providing a variety resources, services, and educational materials to the community and allies; and WHEREAS, everyone should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence, and hatred based on race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, gender identity, gender expression, and/or sexual orientation, we live in a society that does not guarantee that for everyone. This LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people, and dedicate ourselves to protecting the most vulnerable among us; and WHEREAS, there is much work left to reach full equality, we urge all Pomona community members to respect and honor our diverse communities and this Pride Month, we recognize the valuable contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals across America, and we reaffirm our commitment to standing in solidarity with LGBTQIA+ Americans in their ongoing struggle against discrimination and injustice.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA does hereby proclaim the month of June as:
“LGBTQIA+ PRIDE MONTH”
