DISCUSSION:
On April 1, 2024, MWD submitted a grant application to the Federal EPA for the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant, ZEV Transition on behalf of the 10 cities and water districts. The goal of the grant is to help reduce direct emissions associated with internal combustion engine vehicles. This application requested $48,608,138 to fund the replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles with electric motor trucks throughout the MWD service area.
If MWD receives the grant, City staff will, with City Council approval, purchase electric utility trucks and necessary chargers, and seek reimbursement for said expenses. Based on the needs of the Department, City staff requested $3,203,511 for the replacement of 23 vehicles by 2029. If funding is awarded, City staff will return to Council with all the necessary approvals; including appropriation of grant funds, and award of bid for purchase of utility trucks.
