A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA, COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 2025 AS “BLACK HISTORY MONTH” IN THE CITY OF POMONA Whereas, during National Black History Month, we celebrate the vast contributions of African Americans to our Nation’s history and identity; and Whereas, Black History Month grew out of the establishment, in 1926, of Negro History Week by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History; and WHEREAS, the Black History Month 2025 theme, “African Americans and Labors,” focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – intersect with the collective experiences of Black people. Work is at the very center of much of Black history and culture; and Whereas, the City of Pomona is deeply committed to equity and inclusion. This stance includes the cultural and racial affirmation of our students, staff, parents and community members who identify as African American; and Whereas, the City of Pomona strives to close the equity and outcome gaps for African Americans through policies and practices that reflect the experiences of African Americans to ensure greater access and opportunity and honor history, heritage and contributions; and Whereas, our community is better because of the diversity of our population; and NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA does hereby proclaim February 2025 as:
