A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA, COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 2025 “NATIONAL HEART HEALTH MONTH” IN THE CITY OF POMONA WHEREAS, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center recognizes the prevalence of heart disease affecting the residents of our community and is committed to providing equitable access to comprehensive heart care, education and resources to empower individuals in managing their health; and WHEREAS, National Heart Health Month in February provides a valuable opportunity to increase public knowledge about the prevention and management of heart disease, to recognize the impact of this disease on our community, and to support those affected; and WHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 20.1 million adults in the United States (roughly 7.2% of the population) have coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease; and WHEREAS, this disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., responsible for about 695,000 deaths in 2021—which is 1 in every 5 deaths, including many residents of Pomona; and WHEREAS, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, coronary heart disease remained the leading cause of death in 2020, accounting for 12,207 deaths compared to 11,075 in 2019, a 10% increase; and WHEREAS, studies show Sidewalk CPR can double or triple the likelihood of a bystander providing CPR in an emergency and can increase survival rates by up to 2-3 times for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims: and WHEREAS, the City of Pomona in partnership with Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center is committed to improving the health and well-being of its residents by supporting initiatives and programs that educate, prevent and manage heart disease as well as teach the basics of sidewalk CPR.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF POMONA encourage all residents to join in activities and programs that promote awareness, prevention and effective management of disease and does hereby proclaim February 2025 as:
“NATIONAL HEART HEALTH MONTH”
